DOVER - Leading by 13 points with about 5 minutes left in the nightcap, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (11-12) (59-43) had to stave off a fighting comeback by the Mineral City Tigers (1-2) (4-19) (13-53) before the Pirates prevailed 60-54 in the 2nd Consolation Division contest of the night.  With 3 and a half minutes remaining the Corsairs led 58-49, but a layup and a free throw by 6-3 Freshman center Ben Price and a rebound basket by Senior guard Carl Ickes left the Bucs on top only 58-54 with 2 minutes to go.  Play was wild and wooly for the next minute as neither team was able to hit the hoop and after Price missed at the free throw stripe, The Maroon and Grey went into a stall.

Junior guard Bill Gerber was fouled and missed connections, but again Sugarcreek-Shanesville moved into possession before the Tigers could find the bucket.  Again the Pirates went into a freeze and they held the leather until Senior guard Jim Troyer drove in for a birdie a second before the buzzer sounded.  The Striped Cats had its cheering happily at the outset of the encounter.  Three straight rebound baskets, by Price, Ickes and Senior Larry Yost, gave the Orange and Black a 6-0 lead and they held sway until a one hander by Freshman center Merle Clum of the Corsairs made it 14-13 in favor of the Bucs.  Free Throws by Price and the hustling Senior forward Paul Lindsay gave Mineral City the ball again and the Tigers led 19-18 going into the second frame.

A jump shot by Lindsay following 2 free throw tosses by Senior forward Ted Brown, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville scoring leader, put the Cats ahead 21-10, but the Pirates got it back on a jumper by Billy Gerber and they led the rest of the way.  It was 30-28 at intermission land in the 3rd stanza the Corsairs padded its cushion as Brown connected for 4 field goals.  Brown pitched in 20 points and Bill Gerber 15 for the winners who made 23 field goals in 61 shots.  Mineral City made its 21 fielders in 58 shots with Lindsay, the county's No. 1 point-maker, taking down scoring honors with 24 points.  Pitching' Paul had 10 doubledeckers and 4 charity throws, while Price, promising pivet, bagged 7 and 7 for 21 points.
