56 - Mineral City Loses One To Gnaden 78-42 (2-17-56)

The court wasn't long enough when Senior Glenn Hines (33) of the Gnadenhutten Indians and an unidentified Mineral City Tigers cager dived for a loose ball and went into the crowd.  On the scene of action was Referee Allen Viegel of Dover, while Senior Lloyd Porter (77) of the Indians stands by.

Freshman 6-3 Ben Price of the Mineral City Tigers wasn't sliding into 2nd base, but he had the ball as Senior Lloyd Porter (77) and Sophomore Tom Roth (88) of the Gnadenhutten Indians, converge on the play.  The Indians copped an easy 78-42 victory.

DOVER - The Terrific Tigers of Strasburg were still undefeated in 18 games, but the defending District Class B Cage Champions had to pull every trick of the trade out of the hat last night to eke out a 77-70 victory over an upset-minded band of Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates in the county joust at Dover Memorial Hall.  Scoring more points against Strasburt than any other team had been able to do all season, the Pirates never gave ukp and were in front of the Champs midway in the final frame before succumbing.

The Powerful Gnadenhutten Indians made their tournament debut with an easy 78-42 win over the Mineral City Tigers, while the Bolivar Cardinals eliminated the Baltic Eagles from the tournament with a 77-73 decision.  Three games are on tap tonight in a card featured by the 1st appearance of the Midvale Blue Devils.  At 6:30 the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (14-8) meets the Cardinals (8-14) in a Consolation Division tilt, while the Blue Devils (15-5) takes on the Dundee Bulldogs (4-17) at 7:45.  In another Consolation game at 9:00 the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (10-12) returns to meet the Tigers of Mineral City (4-18).  Losers of the 1st and 3rd games will be eliminated.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (19-2) (52-46) had a fast 9-0 lead soon after the tipoff, but cooled off and with the Mineral City Tigers (1-1) (4-18) (13-52) extremely cold, the 1st quarter ended with the Indians on top 10-4.  Sparked by Junior Eldon Miller who made 14 points, including 12 in a row, the Tribe rushed to a 34-25 lead in the 2nd frame and the game was virtually sewed up.  In the 3rd stanza, a free throw by Sophomore Tom Roth, a layup by Larry Biggs and a fast breaker by Larry Clark boosted the difference to 14 points.

Senior Paul Lindsay of the Tigers made a free one, but again the Tribe spurted.  Eight straight markers locked up and soon afterwards most of the fans who had been sitting or standing for hours decided to call it a night.  At the final buzzer, only a few faithful were still on hand.  Gnaden, which connected on 46 percent of its shots from action, got a 22-point performance from Miller, while Roth bagged 11 and Senior Glenn Hines and Biggs 10 each.  Hines and Porter had some tough luck on their shooting in the 1st half and saw limited action in the 2nd.

Lindsay, who made 4 baskets in 11 shots, wound up with 15 points and 6-3 Ben Price, who suffered a sprained ankle in practice Thursday, pitched in 14.  Price was rested for the most part of the 2nd and 3rd quarters.  The Orange and Black made only 24 percent of their shots, making only 2 of 16 in the very 1st quarter.
