56 - Dundee Tops Sugarcreek-Shanesville 67-64 (2-21-56)

DOVER - The Dundee Bulldogs (2-1) (5-18) (33-52) after a tremendous 2nd half comeback administered a 67-64 setback to the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-2) (12-12) (59-44), which had beaten the little Red-White and Blue by 3 points during the regular season and which last week had given the Mighty Strasburg Tigers (18-0) a time of it before falling.

After the count was stalled 5 times in the initial panel the Pirates, sparked by Senior forward Ted Brown and Junior guard Bill Gerber, went ahead as the latter hit on a free throw and followed with a field goal to make the score 14-11.  It was 20-15 after a quarter of play and as the Bulldogs continued shooting badly and losing the ball on turnovers, the Corsairs extended their lead to 39-22 by halftime.  On one occasion in the 3rd stanza, Head Coach Jack Reese's Dundee lads trailed by 22, but they outscored the Bucs 19-13 in that frame and lagged 52-41 entering the final canto.

The last minute  and 35 seconds of the game will be remembered for a long time in both communities.  With 1:35 to go 6-4 Senior Don Levengood, the Pups star who is averaging over 23 points a game, socked in a layup to cut the gap to 64-58.  The tall center followed with a driver to make it 64-60 and the packed house, apparently sensing a "kill," began to let loose.  Brown drove in and hit the hoop, but was called for charging and his basket was nullified.

Husky Senior guard Al Dildine made the 1st free throw and it was 64-61, but Dundee then lost Levengood, who bagged 21 points before he left, on personals.  Brown missed the free throw with 55 seconds remaining and after Sophomore forward Willie Slemmer dropped in a one-hander the Sugarcreek-Shanesville started to stall.  They were in front by a point with 45 seconds to go.  Rod Fruchey, who replaced Levengood, forced a jump ball land the Bulldogs got it.  Senior Bob Walter, steady, heady forward for the Bulldogs, took over.  He connected on a push shot to give the Pups the lead by one point.  Twenty-one seconds remained and the place was really buzzing.

The Pirates moved on the attack, but a wild pass cost them.  Slemmer, who hasn't been seeing too much service because of an injury, squirmed past 2 defenders for a hook shot from the right side and it was all over for the Corsairs.  By virtue of their whirlwind finish Dundee finished with a 25-18 field goal edge.  The Bucs made 28 of 43 free throw tosses and the Bulldogs 17 of 27.  The Pups also lost forward Carl Squires on fouls, while Head Coach Jim Stull's team was deprived of Bill Gerber.

Walter and Dildine, with 16 and 12 points respectively, gave fine support to Levengood, but the part played by Squires, Slemmer and Senior guard Neil Potts cannot be overlooked.  A standout in defeat was Brown who tossed in 24 markers to lead all scorers.  Bill Gerber canned 14 and Jim Troyer a dozen as Sugarcreek-Shanesville concluded with a split in 24 games.
