Senior Forward Larry Stein of the Baltic Eagles dives for a free ball with Junior Forward Terry Deems (10) and Junior Center (hidden in the pileup) of the Tuscarawas Broncos moving in to tie it up. Junior Forward Fritz Syler (11) and Junior Forward Jim Wallace (15) of the Eagles look on at left, while Senior Guard Jim Henry (16) of the Broncos closes at right.
Senior Ralph Vesco is a 5-11 Guard for the Tuscarawas Broncos. Ralph is a veteran of 2 years with the Blue and White. Vesco has been the offensive spark for the Tusky crew which has won 17 games and lost only 2. He led the Broncos with 21 points last night in the 70-47 victory over the Baltic Eagles who now must compete in the Consolation Division.
Fritz Syler is a 6-1 Junior Forward who has been one of the Baltic Eagles' mainstays, both offensively and defensively, throughout the season. A member of last year's top-notch Eagle Reserve Team, Fritz came up to the Varsity this year and has been the key man in several of Baltic's triumphs. He contributed 5 points in a losing cause against the Tuscarawas Broncos last night at Memorial Hall in Dover.
DOVER - The classy Tuscarawas Broncos (2-0) (17-2) (44-40) raced pass another obstacle in their drive for a 2nd crack at the Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (23-0). Head Coach Chuck Lorenz's crew had no trouble with the Baltic Eagles (2-1) (18-4) (29-48) as the Eagles lost altitude in the 2nd frame. The Birds failed to find the range in the 1st quarter, but stayed in contention with Senior forward Tom Ott carrying the offensive load. Ott was still the main cog that kept Baltic moving through the early stages of the 2nd period, but here the pressing defense of the Broncos began to take its toll and the victors shot to a 30-17 lead.
Baltic rallied near the end of the half to pull within 9 points 33-24, but the damage had been done. Tuscarawas lost Senior forward Harry Thompson on personal fouls early in the 3rd stanza, but Tusky trotted away to another big lead in quick fashion and led 51-31 at the far turn. Head Coach Tom Bellville had to take out Ott and his playmaker Senior guard Andy Hoffman because each had 4 personals in the 3rd frame. He shot them back into the lineup in the final canto, but the Broncos continued moving away.
Senior guard Ralph Vesco tallied 21 points for Tuscarawas, while Senior guard Jim Henry, whose swishing push shots were chief blows in the Broncos' attack in the last half, connected for 15, 13 of these coming in the last 2 periods. Ott had 15, while Senior guard Andy Hoffman and 6-3 Junior center Errol Jacobs each had 10 for the Eagles.
