54 - Port Drops Mineral City 64-57 (2-17-54)
Ken Huston, Port Washington Purple Riders' Senior basketball star. Ken was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the League last year. His all-around play makes him a natural leader for the Purple Riders and his ability to score consistently has helped the Riders become a threat in the circuit. Huston was injured at the start of the season and missed several ball games. His return to the lineup has sparked Port to their highest finish in the County League in years. Ken dropped in 12 points along with Junior Paul Franks' 19 markers in the 64-57 victory at Memorial Hall last night.

Sophomore Dwight Ickes, Mineral City's 6-foot Center. Dwight, a veteran of last year's team, wasn't always a starter last season, but has improved with each game this year to help the Tiger cause. Ickes scored 12 points against Port Washington last night.
DOVER - The Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (6-10) (12-48) and Port Washington Washington Purple Riders (1-0) (12-7) (20-49) treated the crowd to a close battle all the way to the wire with the Purple Riders grabbing the lead early in the 3rd quarter and holding off the Tigers in the fading minutes. Head Coach Bob Penrod's Mineral City Team connecting, kept Port hustling in the opening stanza. The score was deadlocked 3 times before the Riders ended the canto with a 4-point 16-12 lead.
Dwight Ickes, a Sophomore forward, caught fire for the Tigers in the 2nd frame and with some help from little Senior guard Bill Crilley and Senior center Gene Argento, shot Mineral City into a 7-point lead in the first 6 minutes of the period. Port Washington raced back into contention in the fading seconds of the 1st half as Senior guard Fred Welsch, Senior guard Jim Landon, Sophomore center Tom Jones and Senior forward Ken Huston connected for 4 fast baskets to put the Purple Riders behind by only 3 points...34-31 at intermission.
Welsch and Landon kept the blaze going as the 3rd quarter opened and Port Washington pulled to a 36-34 edge, but Mineral City deadlocked the count as Ickes connected for his 5th and las jump shot from action. That was the closest the Tigers got the rest of the way as the Purple Riders broke up a tight duel in the closing minutes of the 3rd stanza and pulled away to a 51-42 advantage.
The scrappy Cats still carried the fight to the Riders in the final canto and they matched points down the stretch coming to within 5 points, 62-57, with a minute and 15 seconds left to play. Senior center Larry Combs connected on 2 free throw shots for Port; however, and Port Washington went into a partial stall. Both teams got another crack at the goal in the last minute, but neither scored.
Argento was the top scorer for both teams with his 21 markers and Ickes added 12 for the losers, while Junior forward Paul Frank lead the Purple Riders with 19 points, Huston collected 12 and Welsch 11.
