54 - Gnaden Slows Down Strasburg...But Loses 39-25 (2-20-54)

The Strasburg Tigers' Cheerleaders and the Tiger cheering section flood the floor after Saturday night's game which saw the Bengals top the Gnadenhutten Indians 39-25 after a stalling plan used by the Indians failed.  The victory was Strasburg's 23rd with a defeat this season.

Strasburg's 6-4 Junior Center Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel sends a pass into Senior Forward Eldon (Zeke) Mullett (66) under the basket .  Junior Forward Gary Parrish (88) of Gnaden is caught out of position on the pass, while Sophomore Center Lloyd Porter (77) of the Indians attempts to deflect the ball.  Junior Guard Dave Williams (22) of the Tribe and Junior Forward Jerry Haswell of Strasburg watch the play develop at left.

Senior Fred Peters is the front man of the Strasburg Tigers and is one of the big reasons for the Tigers being undefeated and on top.  The little Guard was benched during last year's tournament play after starting all season, but has come back this season to become an important part of the Bengal offense.  Fred dropped in 4 points against the Gnaden slowdown of the contest last night.

Senior Forward Carl Gilmore is the Gnadenhutten Indians' high-scoring spark plug.  Ranked as one of the most accurate players ever to come down the pike at Gnaden, Carl has been the reason for most of the Indians successes this year.  This includes last night's game when he posted 16 points.  The 5-11 veteran has scored over 400 points this year.

DOVER - The 7 survivors in the 32nd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament will put the finishing touches on their offensive and defensive maneuvers for the 1st three days of this week before rushing into important battles which will write the finish of the annual carnival at Memorial Hall.  The Strasburg Tigers joined the Tuscarawas Broncos, Baltic Eagles and Port Washington Purple Riders in the semi-final round by racking up victory No. 23 in a row in lacing the Gnadenhutten Indians 39-25 in the only Championship Bracket game Saturday night.

The Indians came up with a big of strategy in attempting to stall into a victory, but Strasburg used rebounding ability and good marksmanship to turn that strategy into their favor.  Saturday night's Consolation Division games saw the Dundee Bulldogs and Stone Creek Golden Panthers eliminated as the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates clipped the Bulldogs 59-40 and the Midvale Blue Devils trap the Panthers 72-58.

When the tournament resumes action on Thursday night, Indians will tangle with Pirates in a Consolation Division tilt at 6:30, while the Broncos and Ealges clash in the 1st semi-finals contest at 7:45 and the Tigers meet the Purple Riders in the nightcap at 9:00.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (0-1) (11-12) (49-43) planned stall was well worth the try, but the Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (23-0) (87-23) had too much punch, too much height and that was the story.  The Indians stalled for 2 full minutes before the Tigers came out of a tight zone defense after the ball and Senior guard John Shetler fouled Senior forward Carl Gilmore.  The Tribe's sharp-shooting Brave connected and that gave Gnaden a 1-0 lead, the only lead it owned throughout the tilt.  The next 2 minutes showed why as Junior forward Jerry Haswell connected from the side and then canned a free throw shot after the Bengals had gained the ball on an Indian fumble.

Less than half a minute had gone by when another Gnaden bobble gave Strasburg the ball with Senior guard Fred Peters firing at the board and 6-4 Junior center Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel cashing in on a tip.  That made the score 5-1.  The action for the next 2 minutes was as fast as a snail taking a stroll after a big meal.  The Indians worked the ball around in an attempt to get it to Gilmore in the corner.  They did and 2 more points went up on the Tribe side of the scoreboard.

At this point Gnaden elected to try for a spurt, but the Tigers connected twice more and led 9-3 at the end of the opening quarter.  The Bengals grabbed possession of the ball 2 minutes into the 2nd frame and Goose hooked in a beauty.  That was all for Strasburg in that period as the Indians stalled out the last 6 minutes, trying 2 shots and missing, but regaining possession of the ball on each occasion.  Gilmore then meshed a push shot in the final 2 seconds of the half.  The Tigers led 11-5.  Each team scored, but 2 points in the 2nd period.

Head Coach Don Martin's crew rushed to an 18-5 lead at the outset of the 3rd stanza and led 26-12 at the quarter's end.  The Bengals were on top 39-19 when Coach Martin emptied the bench in the fading minutes and Gilmore closed the gap with 6 quick points.  Gilmore was the game's top scorer with 16, while Haswell of Strasburg had 15.  Senior forward Eldon (Zeke) Mullett had 11, Goose had 9, with Senior guard Fred Peters getting the other 4 markers.
