54 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Sends Dundee Home 59-40 (2-20-54)

The 1954 Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Basketball Team.  FRONT:  Allen Craigo - Bill Pfister - Bill Ray - Max Miller - Paul Snyder - Jim Spahr - Keith Gerber and Ted Brown.  BACK:  Head Coach Bob Wise - Jim Sundheimer (Manager) Bill Gerber - Reno Stevanus - Jim Troyer - Rich Merges - Dan Bear - Bob Mutschelknaus and John McDowell (Manager).

Ted Brown is a Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' Sophomore Forward.  Ted has been the 6th man for the Pirates all season.  Standing 5-9, Brown is tagged as the best jumper on the team and is being counted on for duty as a center in future seasons.  He dropped in 4 points in the triumph over the Dundee Bulldogs last night.

Don Levengood is the Dundee Bulldogs' Sophomore Center.  Don has made plenty of progress in his 1st year of Varsity action and the lanky Bulldog pivotman will be one of the building blocks for next year's squad.  Levengood, standing 6-1, has increased his point production for the Pups and his offensive skills will excel with the amount of experience he absorbs.  Don meshed 5 points against the Pirates.

DOVER - The Dundee Bulldogs (1-2) (13-11) (31-49) and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (56-39) staged a rock'em, sock'em battle for 2 and a half quarters before Head Coach Bob Wise's Buccaneers set full sail and glided away to a decisive victory.  The Bulldogs, who appeared listless after the 1st eight minutes, scrambled to a 16-11 lead in the 1st period and then failed to score in the 2nd frame until more than 6 minutes had passed and as a result, the Pirates, who didn't look their sharpest in that 1st half, led 19-18 at intermission during the 1st Consolation Division contest of the night.

Senior forward Dale Hostetler tallied 4 times from action for Dundee in the 1st canto, but failed to score again.  Senior forward Max Miller was the quartermaster who navigated the Corsairs out of the rough going into smooth sailing as he connected for 19 of his 20-point total in the 2nd half.  Senior forward Dick Slemmer and Sophomore center Don Levengood kept the Bulldogs in the running for the 1st part of the 3rd stanza as the score was tied 6 times before Miller changed course and steered the Bucs into a 30-28 edge.

The Pups failed to score again that period and Sugarcreek-Shanesville led 40-28 at the far turn and continued to set the pace in the final canto.  Slemmer had 9 markers even through a heavy guard was placed on him, while his teammate Junior guard Bob Baker matched that total himself for Dundee.  Senior center Bill Ray had 14 points to rank 2nd in scoring for the Pirates and Senior guard Jim Spahr was also in double  figures with 10.
