35 - Baltic Spirit Gives Pirates Scare 44-22 (2-22-35)
DOVER - Overcoming a spirited Eagle quintet with a driving 2nd half attack, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-0) (18-10), one of the 4 seded teams, won their 1st Class B tournament game by a score of 44-22. Although trailing most of the way, the Baltic Eagles (0-1) (4-11) kept within striking distance of the Pirates in the 1st half and led them several times. The periods ended with Sugarcreek-Shanesville leading 6-4, 15-10 and 26-14.
In the final 2 stanzas, Senior center Harold Arnold and Sophomore guard Cliff Moomaw of the Pirates started hitting the bucket with terrible regularity. Arnold wound up the high scorer of the evening with 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws) and Moomaw collected 10 (5 field goals) himself. Another Pirate, sophomore forward John Harmon, also pitched in 10 points (5 Field goals). The Baltic Eagles were led by guard Jack Hammel with 9 points (4 field goals and a free throw).
