35 - 13th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament

DOVER - Drawings for the 13th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B High School Basketball Tournament, which this year promises to be one of the best on record, were made at a meeting of the Class B Athletic Association at the county school board offices on Saturday afternoon.  The tournament, which runs February 22-23, March 1-2, will be held at Legion Hall.

By a majority vote the coaches ceded the Strasburg Tigers, Bolivar Cardinals, Tuscarawas Broncos and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates positions in the 4 brackets of the schedule with the result that these teams cannot meet before the semi-finals.  Strasburg, the Gnadenhutten Indians, Tuscarawas and the Mineral City Tigers drew into the top bracket with 1st round byes.  All the other teams in the County League and the Ragersville Pirates, which will be the 12th team in the competition, are in the lower bracket and must play one more game than those in the upper half.

Opening games in the top bracket, scheduled for February 23, have Strasburg meeting Gnadenhutten and Tuscarawas meeting Mineral City.  In the bottom bracket, where the tournament opens on February 22, Bolivar plays the Port Washington Purple Riders in the 1st game of the tournament.  Other pairings are Ragersville vs the Midvale Blue Devils, Sugarcreek-Shanesville vs the Baltic Eagles and the Stone Creek Panthers vs the Dundee Bulldogs.

As the teams lose out in the regular tournament they will take positions in a Consolation Tournament to be played by the losing combinations.  The winner and runner-up of the regular tourney and the winner of the consolation meeting will be qualified for participation in the Class B Sectional Tournament at Legion Hall the week after the county tournament closes.

Trophies for the winners will be presented at the final session of the tournament.  Bill Ress of Dover is in charge of the trophies.  C.H. Hannahs of Nelsonville will referee the 1st session of the tournament and Earl D. Gross of New Philadelphia will handle the remainder of the games on the regular schedule.  Ralph Sundheimer of Walnut Creek will work the consolation games.

Ceding of the 1st 4 teams in the League Standings was voted for a period of 3 years as the coaches refused to vote for one year only.
