26 - Bolivar Rolls Over Philo 36-20 (3-12-26)

CAMBRIDGE - The Bolivar Cardinals, runners-up in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament, won their 1st game in the Eastern District Class B Basketball Tournament in Cambridge Friday afternoon, when they defeated the Philo Electrics 36-20 in a fast contest that saw them leading every inch of the game.  Head Coach Walker's aggreation , which upset the Strasburg Tigers two weeks ago and showed themselves to be a basketball team, are well liked at the Cambridge tourney and are given favorites to win from the Toronto Red Knights when they clash on Saturday.

Philo; although, not a formidable opponent, displayed teamwork at some times that threaten to fake the Cardinals out of the lead.  It was teamwork and passing which Coach Walker has drilled into his men that pulled them through in the initial contest.  Senior forward Harry Notter led Bolivar with 9 field goals and 2 foul shots for 20 points.  Junior forward John Reiger, Senior guard Maurice Helwick and Senior center Randall Gerber followed up with 6, 5 and 4 points.  Krier led Philo with 10 points.

26 - Frazeysburg Takes-Out Tuscarawas Tourney Champ - Sugarcreek-Shanesville 21-11 (3-12-26)

CAMBRIDGE - Head Coach Bahier's Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' basketball organization , winners of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament for 1926 two weeks ago when they defeated the Bolivar Cardinals, was defeated in the 1st round of the Eastern District Ohio High School Class B Basketball Tournament at Cambridge Friday evening.  They lost to the Frazysburg Red Raiders 21-11 after trailing nearly the whole game.  The Sugartown drew a bye in the 1st round and didn't play their 1st game until 9PM Friday evening.  Frazysburg won the 1st tournament game played at 9AM and defeated Caldwell High School 12-10.

The large floor had nothing to do with the defeat handed the Sugarcreek boys, but they had never played on the hardwood in Cambridge before and of course it was strange to them.  Frazysburg is now required to play their semi-final game with St. Clairsville High School who defeated Bridgeport high 31-14 Friday evening in one of the fastest games of the tourney.

NOTE:  So what's going on here and why out of sequence?  I just forgot that Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Bolivar would go on to the District after the Tuscarawas Tournament.  I gathered the research and since I am not a skilled computer type, I had to place the information here or not at all...sorry.

27 - *Gnadenhutten Rocks Over Dennison 31-23 (3-11-12)

CAMBRIDGE - The Gnadenhutten Indians (4-1), runners-up in the Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament here this season, defeated the Dennison Railroaders 31-23 and survived the 2nd round of play in the Southwestern District Class B Tournament in McMahon Gymnasiu at Cambridge Friday night.  It was the 2nd victory of the tourney for the Indians with Coshocton Sacred Heart High School having fallen in the opening round Thursday evening 24-19.  Dennison gained the right to meet Gnadenhutten in the 2nd round by defeating the Strasburg Tigers, the Tuscarawas County Class B champs, 25-20 in the opening round on Thursday.

Gnadenhutten jumped into the lead with an 8-6 count over Dennison in  the initial quarter.  The lead was increased to 19-12 at halftime and at the end of the 3rd period the Indians were still leading 25-21, a 4-point margin.  Senior forwards Bill Helter and Senior Paul Kennedy were the scoring aces for the Indians' combination with 26 points between them.  Guards Sophomore Alvin Williams and Junior Clarence Uhrich were the other scorers with 5 points, closing out the Gnaden total.  Carnahan with 5 baskets and 1 foul shot was the high man for the Dennison combination.

The biggest surprise of the tournament came Friday afternoon when Joe Hurst's Adena High School quintet walloped Macksburg 36-13 in the 2nd round.  Macksburg was expected to give Adena more of a battle, but the Adeneans displayed too strong an offensive.  Cadiz High School put Woodsfield High School out of the running in the afternoon 37-24, Lowell beat Pennsville 19-16 and Nashport stayed in the tourney by eliminating McConnellsville 37-21.

NOTE:  This leaves the following still in the tournament:

Cadiz
Gnadenhutten
Lowell
Nashport
Macksburg

However, nothing more was published in The Daily Reporter (Microfisch) about this tournament.  And so ends 1927.  Gnaden did not go to the State Tournament which means they lost their next game.  Senior Bill Healter, Gnaden forward, was selected to the District All-Star 2nd Team.

CAMBRIDGE - Both Dennison High School Railroaders and Gnadenhutten High School Indians survived the opening round of the Eastern District Class B Basketball Tournament at Cambridge which opened in McMahan Gymnasium, that city, on Thursday evening.  Dennison defeated Strasburg High Scool Tigers, Tuscarawas-County Class B Champions, 25-20, after 2 hectic overtime periods and Gnadenhutten triumpted over Coshoction Sacred Heart High School 24-19 in an interesting game.  Dennison and Gnadenhutten will meet in the 2nd round of play in the tourney Friday evening.

Coshocton Sacred Heart proved no match to the 5 floormen of Coach Willis Smith, of Gnadenhutten.  The Indian village cagemen romped to victory throughout the entire 32 minutes of play, scoring 9 field baskets and 6 foul counters to score 24 points.  Senior forward Bill Helter with 6 field goals and 2 fouls, was the high scoring ace for the Indian aggregation, while Junior guard Clarence Uhrich, guard Sophomore Alvin Williams and Senior forward Paul Kennedy contributed the remainder of Gnadenhutten's points.  Meitland, Coshocton forward was the high scorer for his team with 5 field goals and a foul shot, totaling 11 points.  Forward John Kinney, center Jim Kinney, guard Murphy and guard Skelton picked up 4, 2, 1 and 1 points to close out the Sacred Heart scoring.

CAMBRIDGE - The Strasburg Tigers, the Tuscarawas County Class  B Basektball Tournament winner,  gave the Dennison Railroaders a battle during the Eastern Ohio District Class B Tournament from the opening whistle until the final gun.  Dennison led 4-2 at the quarter, 11-6 at halftime, 16-11 at the 3rd quarter, but the Tigers climbed in the final minutes sto tie the score at the end.  One overtime period was not sufficient to decide the winner and a second 3 minute play was necessitated.  It was the 2nd meeting of the year between Dennison and Strasburg.  Dennison taking a 26-12 decision at Dennison during the course of the regular playing schedule.

Senior forward Leland Huth and Junior forward Orval Deems were the scoring aces for the Strasburg quintet with 8 and 4 points respectively.  Every man on the Franklin-township first team; however, sent at least one field counter through the nets.  George Hibbard and Dyson with 7 points each led the Dennison attack.

27 - All-Tournament Team 1927

DOVER - Choosing of an all Tuscarawas County mythical basketball quintet from the 10 teams that participated in the Class B Tournament at the American Legion Auditorium Saturday is not an easy job.  Over 60 basketball players participated in the tourney games this season from those 10 teams and of that 60, to pick 5 of the best is a great undertaking.  Some persons undoubtedly will be unsatisfied with the choosing of certain players for certain positions, while others will say "that was my choice."  In choosing an all county team from the performance of the boys in tournament and in games this season, I would name Senior Leland Huth of Strasburg, Junior Harland Sliffe of Sugarcreek-Shanesville as forwards; Junior Paul Sundheimer of Stasburg as the center; Fisher of Bolivar and Williams of Gnadenhutten for the guards.  Those 5 players, I believe could win from any other combination of floormen that one could chose from the 60 basketball players.

But, out of that 60 there are others who are excellent Class B floormen too.  As a 2nd team, Moomaw of Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Junior Orval Deems of Strasburg, look like the next-best forwards.  At center I would choose the elongated Junior Lester Price of Dundee, who has shown considerable ability all season despite the fact that his team was one of the 1st to lose in the tournament.  For guards on my 2nd team I would choose Junior Stan Miller of Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Senior Walter Neidenthal of Strasburg.  And that 2nd team would undoubtedly give the 1st team a real battle.

Huth on the 1st team is a real floorman and the writer chooses him as being the best man on the floor at the tournament.  Leland is a very accurate shot and can play a wonderful floor game.  It was this lad that caused Sugarcreek-Shanesville to go to pieces in the semi-final game.  Huth could probably hold a forward position on Class A combines under proper coaching.  Sliffe has been a scorer all season at Sugarcreek and was a scorer in  the tournament as well.  He scored 30 points Saturday morning when Sugarcreek whipped Tuscarawas 61-7.  Harland plays a nice defensive game also.

Sundheimer is chosen for the center position because of his able showing over Kohl, the   Gnadenhutten center on Saturday night.  He held Kohl scoreless and went out and collected 7 points himself.  Williams, Gnadenhutten guard is probably one of the best guards in the tournament.  He was chosen mostly for his exhibition in the tournament games.  Fisher, the other guard, has been playing a sweet defensive game at Sugarcreek all season and isoneof the best Class  B guards in the county.  Here they are:

1st Team

Leland Huth,Strasburg Tigers Forward
Harland Sliffe, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Forward
Paul Sundheimer, Strasburg Tigers Center
Williams, Gnadenhutten Indians Guard
Fisher, Bolivar Cardinals Guard

2nd Team

Moomaw, Sugrcreek-Shanesville Forward
Orval Deems, Strasburg Tigers Forward
Lester Price, Dundee Bulldogs Center
Stan Miller, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Guard
Walter Neidenthal, Strasburg Tigers Guard

27 - Strasburg Wins 5th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-26-27)

The Gnadenhutten Indians Cheerleaders for 1927:  Ben Schreiner and Dorothy (Dort) Schreiner.  (1927 Yearbook Photo)

DOVER - Strasburg High School's Tigers (4-0) (11-3) won the Annual 1927 County Class B Basketball Championship Saturday night in the American Legion auditorium by defeating the Gnadenhutten High School's Indians (2-1) (5-4) by 8 points, 23-15 in an interesting and exciting game from start to finish.  It was the 2nd tournament title for the Strasburg Tigers.  The Orange and Black jerseyed basketball team won it's way to the championship by winning 4 games in two days.  They disposed of Dundee High School 21-17 at Community Hall in Sugarcreek on Friday night; won from Bolivar High School 17-5 Saturday morning and then Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School 35-24 in the afternoon.  Both of the latter games were played in the American Legion Auditorium.

After Strasburg had beaten Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School, fans conceded them the championship.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville had been favorites to win the county tourney, but Strasburg surprised the sport public by the overwhelming defeat of the Pirate township quintet.  The Tiger team in Saturday afternoon's battle against Sugarcreek-Shanesville, practically outclassed the latter squad that had gone through an entire Class B schedule of games this season without losing a single encounter.  Saturday night a large crowd of Strasburg Sport fans and fans from other Class  B schools, filled the American Legion Hall to see the tilt between Gnadenhutten and Strasburg.

Strasburg opened the game by holding Gnadenhutten to a pair of foul shots in the 1st quarter, while the winners counted 2 field goals and a pair of foul shots (6-2).  Both teams played almost on a par in the 2nd quarter, but Strasburg gained the lead, with the half ending at 14-9.  The 2 squads battled fiercely in the next period and Strasburg boosted their total to 21, while Gnadenhutten added 4 points, making them a total of 13.  Both teams caged a field goal in the final period.  Junior center Paul Sundheimer lead the Tigers in scoring with 3 field goals and a foul shot for 7 points.  Junior forward Orval Deems hit for 3 field goals, Senior forward Leland Huth hit 2 field goals and a foul shot and Senior guard Walter Neidenthal hit a field goal and a foul shot for 6, 5, and 3 points, respectively.  Senior forward Captain Paul Kennedy led the Indians with 3 field goals and a foul shot for 7 points.  Senior forward Bill Helter had 5 points, Junior Clarence Uhrich hit for 2 points and Alvin Williams swished a lone foul shot for 1 point to close out the Gnaden scoring.

27 - Strasburg Takes-Down Sugarcreek 35-24 (2-26-27)

DOVER - In the semi-final game Saturday afternoon, the Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (10-3) looked much better than their favored opponents, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (7-2).  Strasburg Senior forward Leland Huth was the main cog in the Strasburg scoring wheel that sent them into a winning score of 35 points.  Huth scored 6 field goals and 5 foul shots out of 8 attempts from the free throw line for 17 points.  He broke up numerous plays of the Sugarcreek combine and worked the ball into scoring position for his team.  Through his uncanny ability Huth won a place as forward on the Tuscarawas mythical Class B quintet chosen by a representative of the Daily Reporter.

Strasburg made victory out of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville game from the very beginning.  They took a 5-4 lead over their opponents in the 1st period, increased it to a lead of 17-12 at halftime and were leading 24-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville never gave up hope of winning from Strasburg, though.  They tied the score at 17-17 and at 19-19.  Moomaw led in the scoring for Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 6 field  goals and 1 foul shot for 13 points.  Junior forward Harlan Sliffe, Junior center Howard Gerber, Junior guard Stan Miller and Senior center Bob Neff all contributed with 5, 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively.  Strong support for Strasburg's Huth, were Senior guard Walter (Warren) Mizer with 6 points and Senior guard Walter Neidenthal with 5 points.  Juniors forward Orval Deems and center Paul Sundheimer closed out the Tigers' scoring with 4 and 3 points.

27 - Gnaden Stops Port Washington In Their Debut 28-21 (2-26-27)

The Port Washington Eagles in their 1st ever appearance in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.  However, they did not participate in the county League this year (1926-27).  They will begin League play in the 1927-28 Season.  The Coach is believed to be Mearl Welker.  We have no idea as to who is who in the photo.  There are 9 players in the photo, but only 7 were in the only game of the tournament.  They were:  Senior Charles Frank - Junior Joe Evans - Junior Will Johns - Freshman Earl Wheland - Freshman Lynn Haupert and Freshman John Bond.  The last individual on the team was only described as Hand.  (Photo Contributed by Gary Gay 1961)
