39 - Tusky Rolls Over Holmesville 36-23 (3-2-39)

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior Center Fred Blackstone is awarded game honors on his 14 point (6 field goals and 2 free throws) performance in leading his team to a 36-23 triumph over the Holmesville Golden Bears.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers, Midvale Blue Devils and Tuscarawas Broncos, 3 of the county's entrants in the Class B Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall here, barely eked out wins in the tournament opened last night, eliminating 2 of Holmes County and one Carroll County teams.

To say the 3 county teams won is enough in tournament play where one slip means the end, but Strasburg put on a last-minute rally to defeat the Millersburg Knights 44-39, Midvale scored a field goal in the last seconds to defeat the Sherrodsville Rockets 30-29 and Tuscarawas got up enough steam to eliminate the Holmesville Golden Bears 36-23.  The crowd at the opening session was small...not over 500 paid customers attending according to Tournament Manager D.C. Lemmon...but thrills were plentiful for supporters of the competing teams.

In the final game of the evening, the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-1) (18-4)...depended upon 6-foot 4-inch  Senior center Fred Blackstone, to give them a victory over the Holmesville Golden Bears (10-6) of Holmes County.

The game was featured only by the misplaysof the 2 teams, but Tusky mustered enough passwork to lead by 9-4 at the 1st quarter, 18-11 at the half and 22-19 at the 3rd period.  In the final quarter, the Broncos scored 14 points to the Golden Bears' 4 markers to put the game on solid ice.

Blackstone led the scoring with 14 points, while Holmesville forward Vincent was next with 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free tosses).  Jimmy Morgan of New Philadelphia and Ralph Sundheimer of Walnut Creek refereed all games.
