DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (8-0) (24-1) and the Philo Electrics put on an exhibition last night. It was a contest that made tournament history as the Dennison Railroaders and the performance of Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Tigers against one of the most powerful opponents they have faced this year was one to earn them compliments of the highest kind.
Carrying through on shear courage and plenty of fight, the Burgers came with a spine-tingling 3rd quarter rally that cut away a 9-point lead held by the Electrics and boosted the Tigers into a 35-33 advantage at the start of the final chukker, wherein the 1,800 fans packing the hall whipped into a basketball frenzy that lasted for several minutes after the game had ended. The actual finish of the game was the wildest ever witnessed in any of the great struggles that have marked tournament play in the past in the big Dennison Gymnasium.
After forging ahead to a 42-35 led early in the final period, the Tigers slumped and Philo quickly moved its total to 40 points, scoring 2 quick baskets by stealing the ball. They went on to tie it and then moved ahead 43-42 on one of 2 free throws pitched by Philo's guard Clark. Only seconds remained. Strasburg gained the ball and quick passes worked it to Senior guard Bob Dreher who flipped it in from the corner for what eventually was the winning points.
But, with that hugh crowd on its feet and literally "going to town," the noise of the timers' buzzer signaling the end of the game was drowned out. Men at the scoring bench 2 places from the buzzer didn't hear it. Meanwhile, Philo grabbed the ball after that worthly shot, tossed it to Clark back of mid-court and that worthy, who helped spark the Philo attack, tossed it through the hoop. The ball was taken halfway back up the floor before Timer Sam Begland of Gnadenhutten could grab a gun and fire it several times to attract the officials' attention. He ruled that time was out immediately after Dreher's shot and that Clark's final basket did not count. While the buzzer went unheard, a red signal light flashed on the electric timing clock; likewise, went unseen in those hectic final seconds.
Philo, paced by Don Fitz, their All-State forward, took an 8-6 lead on Strasburg in the 1st quarter and then, after falling behind 13-8, forged ahead again to lead 22-13 as the half ended. Strasburg caught up in the 3rd stanza and then moved out ahead as the 2 teams had one of the greatest scoring battles in years. The Tigers counted 32 points in that 3rd period and Philo, a smooth, spot-passing combination that gave Strasburg's zone defense a real acid test, counted 11.
The payoff is in the fact that 3 Tiger regulars, Seniors center Lloyd "Mule" Haas, forward Loren Miller and guard Blake Roush played in that wild 3rd quarter with 3 personal fouls hanging over them and the shadow of the showers looming big. Eventually all 3 were banished from the game. Philo lost men via the foul route, D. Hughes, center and Captain and Homman, a regular guard.
Senior Maurice Bayer, star forward, led the Strasburg attack with 14 points, counting 6 field goals and 2 free throws despite great difficulty experienced by his teammates in working the ball to him in the pivot. Junior center Fred Yenny, Tiger substitute, zipped through 10 points, 8 of them in the 3rd period when he set the pace for the uprising. Philo's Fitz skipped off with scoring honors with 16 points on 6 field goals and 4 free throws. He missed 6 of the free tosses.
