39 - Dennison Wins District Championship 47-34 (3-11-39)
DENNISON - Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Tigers, who won the District Title last year and who have covered themselves with titles during Roby's regime, drummed up a distinct threat late in the 2nd quarter, but fell back when Dennison stiffened and beat it off.
The Dennison Railroaders (16-5) in the 1st quarter went on to lead 16-8 before the Strasburg Tigers (8-1) (24-2) made the bid with baskets by Seniors forward Maurice Bayer and forward Loren Miller and a free throw by guard Bob Dreher which promptly cut the Dennison advantage back to 5 points with the score 18-13. The period ended with the same margin between the teams; although, Dennison was then leading 20-15 and had outscored the Burgers 13 to 7. The Railroaders added 4 more points to their advantage in the 3rd quarter, collecting 12 points to Strasburg's 8. In the final chukker, which opened with the Railroaders leading 32-23, the winners tallied 15 points to the Tigers 11.
Forward Gene Wolfe, elongated Dennison Captain and his high jumping teammate, center Don Galbraith, set the pace for the victors, each collecting 15 points on 6 field goals and 3 free throws. Wolfe was banished from the game in the last minutes on personal fouls, the only Dennisonian to draw the number. Strasburg lost Miller and Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas, the latter going out early in the 4th period and Miller losing out at the end of the game with Railroader forward Whitmire scoring the game's final point on the free throw given him on the foul. Dennison caged 11 of 21 free throws and Strasburg collected on 8 of 15.
Referees Ray Scherrer of Columbus and A.B. Long of Newark, who worked the entire tournament and won loud praise from fans and coaches alike for their work, called 14 fouls against Strasburg and 12 against Dennison.
