39 - Strasburg Downs Millersburg 44-39 (3-2-39)
Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Maurice Bayer led his team to victory over the Millersburg Knights 44-39 and in so doing picked up game honors in the 1st game of the Sectional Tournament. He picked off 15 points (6 field goals and 3 free throws).
DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (5-0) (21-1), the strongest team in the county League this year and winner of the county League and tournament titles, found no soft touch in the Millersburg Knights (9-9) and won the game only through a 3rd period rally before 2 of its best men went out on fouls.
Both teams were hot in the 1st quarter and scored point for point to wind up the period in an 11-11 tie, but in the 2nd stanza, right out of the box, the Burgers took the edge sweeping into a 29-23 lead at intermission.
With Senior forward Maurice Bayer scoring repeatedly on his pivot play, the Tigers grabbed a 36-26 lead late in the 3rd period before Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas and Senior guard Blake Roush were ejected on personal fouls and from then on the going got tough. Strasburg ran the score to 41-28 early in the 4th period and then the Knights ran wild, sinking shots from all angles and stealing the ball for sucker shots to run their score to 39 points with only 2 minutes to play. But, the rally fizzled out when Senior guard Bob Spidell dropped in a basket and Senior forward Loren Miller scored a free throw shot to give the Tigers their 5-point advantage.
Bayer led the scoring for both teams with 15 points, while Hitchcock, big Spartan center, led Millersburg with 12 (3 field goals and 6 free throws). Forward Close scored 11 markers for the Knights and Roush made 10 points for the Burgermeisters.
