39 - Dennison Wins District Championship 47-34 (3-11-39)

DENNISON - Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Tigers, who won the District Title last year and who have covered themselves with titles during Roby's regime, drummed up a distinct threat late in the 2nd quarter, but fell back when Dennison stiffened and beat it off.

The Dennison Railroaders (16-5) in the 1st quarter went on to lead 16-8 before the Strasburg Tigers (8-1) (24-2) made the bid with baskets by Seniors forward Maurice Bayer and forward Loren Miller and a free throw by guard Bob Dreher which promptly cut the Dennison advantage back to 5 points with the score 18-13.  The period ended with the same margin between the teams; although, Dennison was then leading 20-15 and had outscored the Burgers 13 to 7.  The Railroaders added 4 more points to their advantage in the 3rd quarter, collecting 12 points to Strasburg's 8.  In the final chukker, which opened with the Railroaders leading 32-23, the winners tallied 15 points to the Tigers 11.

Forward Gene Wolfe, elongated Dennison Captain and his high jumping teammate, center Don Galbraith, set the pace for the victors, each collecting 15 points on 6 field goals and 3 free throws.  Wolfe was banished from the game in the last minutes on personal fouls, the only Dennisonian to draw the number.  Strasburg lost Miller and Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas, the latter going out early in the 4th period and Miller losing out at the end of the game with Railroader forward Whitmire scoring the game's final point on the free throw given him on the foul.  Dennison caged 11 of 21 free throws and Strasburg collected on 8 of 15.

Referees Ray Scherrer of Columbus and A.B. Long of Newark, who worked the entire tournament and won loud praise from fans and coaches alike for their work, called 14 fouls against Strasburg and 12 against Dennison.

39 - Strasburg Ekes-Out Another Wild One 44-43 (3-9-39)

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (8-0) (24-1) and the Philo Electrics  put on an exhibition last night.  It was a contest that made tournament history as the Dennison Railroaders and the performance of Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Tigers against one of the most powerful opponents they have faced this year was one to earn them compliments of the highest kind.

Carrying through on shear courage and plenty of fight, the Burgers came with a spine-tingling 3rd quarter rally that cut away a 9-point lead held by the Electrics and boosted the Tigers into a 35-33 advantage at the start of the final chukker, wherein the 1,800 fans packing the hall whipped into a basketball frenzy that lasted for several minutes after the game had ended.  The actual finish of the game was the wildest ever witnessed in any of the great struggles that have marked tournament play in the past in the big Dennison Gymnasium.

After forging ahead to a 42-35 led early in the final period, the Tigers slumped and Philo quickly moved its total to 40 points, scoring 2 quick baskets by stealing the ball.  They went on to tie it and then moved ahead 43-42 on one of 2 free throws pitched by Philo's guard Clark.  Only seconds remained.  Strasburg gained the ball and quick passes worked it to Senior guard Bob Dreher who flipped it in from the corner for what eventually was the winning points.

But, with that hugh crowd on its feet and literally "going to town," the noise of the timers' buzzer signaling the end of the game was drowned out.  Men at the scoring bench 2 places from the buzzer didn't hear it.  Meanwhile, Philo grabbed the ball after that worthly shot, tossed it to Clark back of mid-court and that worthy, who helped spark the Philo attack, tossed it through the hoop.  The ball was taken halfway back up the floor before Timer Sam Begland of Gnadenhutten could grab a gun and fire it several times to attract the officials' attention.  He ruled that time was out immediately after Dreher's shot and that Clark's final basket did not count.  While the buzzer went unheard, a red signal light flashed on the electric timing clock; likewise, went unseen in those hectic final seconds.

Philo, paced by Don Fitz, their All-State forward, took an 8-6 lead on Strasburg in the 1st quarter and then, after falling behind 13-8, forged ahead again to lead 22-13 as the half ended.  Strasburg caught up in the 3rd stanza and then moved out ahead as the 2 teams had one of the greatest scoring battles in years.  The Tigers counted 32 points in that 3rd period and Philo, a smooth, spot-passing combination that gave Strasburg's zone defense a real acid test, counted 11.

The payoff is in the fact that 3 Tiger regulars, Seniors center Lloyd "Mule" Haas, forward Loren Miller and guard Blake Roush played in that wild 3rd quarter with 3 personal fouls hanging over them and the shadow of the showers looming big.  Eventually all 3 were banished from the game.  Philo lost men via the foul route, D. Hughes, center and Captain and Homman, a regular guard.

Senior Maurice Bayer, star forward, led the Strasburg attack with 14 points, counting 6 field goals and 2 free throws despite great difficulty experienced by his teammates in working the ball to him in the pivot.  Junior center Fred Yenny, Tiger substitute, zipped through 10 points, 8 of them in the 3rd period when he set the pace for the uprising.  Philo's Fitz skipped off with scoring honors with 16 points on 6 field goals and 4 free throws.  He missed 6 of the free tosses.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers and the Dennison Railroaders today were cagerly awaiting their crack at the Eastern Ohio District Class B Championship and a trip to Columbus as a result of winning final games in the Eastern Ohio Northern Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall on Saturday night.

Strasburg, victors over the Midvale Blue Devils 25-23 in an overtime sudden-death tilt and Dennison, easy winner over the Tuscarawas Broncos 35-21, draw at Dennison tonight against the Philo Electrics and New Concord Little Muskies, winners of the Eastern Ohio Southern Sectional Tournament.  Drawings will be held at 7:30PM in the Dennison High School building under supervision of Tournament Manager E.P. McCarroll and the 2 county teams will draw against the 2 other teams.  The result will be that the county teams cannot meet until the final game.

When it comes to class, the Dennison Railroaders (16-5) seem to have it for Saturday night they eliminated the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-2) (18-5) with such precision the game seemed a walk-away.  The 1st period was close, Dennison taking a 9-6 edge, but the Railroaders went in front by 17-7 by the halftime, holding Tusky's big Broncos to one point in the 2nd quarter.

With guard Dean Hunt and forward Harold Ramsey zipping 3 buckets through apiece and with their defense still clicking, the Railroaders went far ahead in the 3rd stanza, copping off a 30-13 lead and coasting through in the final period.  Hunt scored 14 points in the game and gained game honors, while Ramsey followed with 9, center Don Galbraith 6 and forward Gene Wolfe with 5 markers for Dennison.  Forward Clarence Rolli and center Fred Blackstone led Tuscarawas with 5 points apiece.

Secret of the Railroaders play seem to be that they have 5 fast and accurate passers, a man-to-man defense, which keeps their opponents from getting any kind of shots at the basket and a group of well-drilled spot shooters.  During both their Sectional games they scored an average of 10 points a period for the 1st 3 periods, while holding their opponents to 5 or less points at the same time.

A zone defense is not the least baffling to them for they pass in, out and around it like veterans and when the Berlin Blue Jays came out with a man-to-man defense the other night, the Railroaders promptly opened up with a series of block plays that worked perfectly.

NOTE:  A crowd of 1,100 which attended the Class B Sectional at Memorial Hall here Saturday night brought gate receipts up to a par with last years, Tournament Manager D.C. Lemmon announced.  Saturday night's crowd was by far the largest of the 3-day joust and helped to make up for a poor Friday night.

Box office at the tournament collected $770 from 2,287 fans who attended the 7 games, Lemmon said.  Thursday night a total of 620 students and adults attended, while Friday night only 567 were present to see the games.

Most noticeable was the large crowd from Dennison, while on the other hand Strasburg, which brought hundreds of fans with it for the county tournament, didn't seem as well represented.

39 - Strasburg Wins In Sudden-Death 25-23 (3-4-39)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Maurice Bayer received game honors with his 13 point (4 field goals and 5 free throws) performance leading his team to a Sudden-Death win over the Midvale Blue Devils 25-23.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers' (7-0) (23-1) victory over the Midvale Blue Devils (3-2) (17-7) on Saturday night was expected...but as the score indicated it was one of those games which depend upon luck and the Burgers had it.  Still smarting under the 45-33 trouncing the Tigers gave them in the County Championship game, the Blue Devils were out for victory as they came as close to it as was possible.

The 1st quarter ended 6-5 with Strasburg ahead and the half at 14-13 with Midvale leading, but the 3rd stanza saw both teams tied at 19-all.  Defenses tightened in the final period, but the Blue Devils scored first on a long shot by Midvale's forward Frank Morrison.  Then Tiger Junior guard Fred Yenny matched it and with less than 2 minutes to go Senior guard Blake Roush sent Strasburg into a 2-point lead by scoring a field goal.  Seconds went by and only 45 were remaining when Midvale's guard Bob Baldwin sunk a long one from the center of the floor and the game ended with the score knotted at 23-23.

In the 1st minute of the "sudden-death" overtime period, the Blue Devils got no less than 6 shots at the basket, but missed every one, while the Tigers, holding its fire, attempted to work the ball in.  Roush took a pass on the side near the center circle, faked, leaped up and let fly a 2-handed jump shot which swished the net for the deciding points.

Although Roush scored only 2 field goals he was easily the hero of the game; because, he dropped them in when it counted.  Maurice Bayer, Strasburg pivotman, led the scoring with 13 points, while Bill Stevenson, Midvale's star scoring machine, was close behind with 11 markers.  Unusual was the fact that Bayer made all his team's 5 free throws and Stevenson made the Blue Devils 3 free throws.  The winners missed a foul shot and the losers missed 3.  The victory was Strasburg's 23rd in 24 games, the only loss being to the Dennison Railroaders, during the season, by an 11-point margin.  The Strasburg Tigers move on to the District Tournament.

39 - Faultering Strasburg Remains Alive Over St. Joseph 42-30 (3-3-39)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Center Lloyd "Mule" Haas earns game honors as he scores 14 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading the Tigers over the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers 42-30.

DOVER - Built up by a red-hot display of basketball at last night's 2-game session the finals of the Class B Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall tonight will field 4 Tuscarawas County teams...the Strasburg Tigers, Dennison Railroaders, Midvale Blue Devils and Tuscarawas Broncos...fighting it out with the winners going to the District Tournament finals at Dennison next week.

Only a meager crowd of between 500 and 600 saw last night's session with the powerful Dennison Railroaders eliminating the Berlin Blue Jays of Holmes County, the last of the 4 visiting teams, 37-25 and Strasburg's Tigers finally defeating a gallant Dover St. Joseph crew 42-30.

The Dennison-Berlin game last night fairly smacked of good basketball in spots, but Head Coach Dutch Furbay's Railroaders led the Blue Jays at every turn and it was not near as interesting as the Strasburg-Dover St. Joseph tilt.  In fact, for 3 periods Head Coach Max Kratz's Ramblers threatened to reach down in the bag and pull out the granddaddy of all upsets before Head Coach Paul M. Roby's County Champs hit the bucket with dead-eye accuracy in the final period to score 20 points and clinch the victory.

How the Ramblers...supposedly one of the weakest teams in the tournament...could ever compile their bad record of 6 wins and 13 defeats is a mystery in the face of the way they played in last night's contest.  They checked the Burgers at every turn, matched basket for basket and free throw for free throw for 3 periods before Strasburg led by Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas' long shots, could get command of the game.

Notice of what was coming was served in the opening period when the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers (6-14) snatched off a 6-4 lead in the 1st quarter, but the crowd didn't get wise until halftime when the Strasburg Tigers (6-0) (22-1) had to score a field goal in the last few seconds to knot the count at 12-12.  Both teams were exactly even at the intermission in number of field goals made, free throws counted and personal fouls on players...the only one exception being that the Tigers missed one more free throw than did the Ramblers.

The 3rd period went on and still St. Joseph failed to weaken and knoted the count at every turn until the last minutes of the quarter.  Then Haas started his scoring spree by dropping in 2 long shots which didn't even touch the hoop and gave Strasburg a 22-18 lead.  Strasburg even then didn't have the game in the bag for midway in the 4th stanza the Tigers led by only 27-22, after which came the deluge of baskets and the Ramblers, still trying desperately though not wildly, couldn't match it.

Haas led the scoring with 12 points, including 5 field goals he made in the last half, while forward Rich Kennedy of Dover St. Joseph was close behind with 5 classy fielders for 10 points.  Senior guard Blake Roush scored 9 for the Tigers and Senior forward Maurice Bayer 7, while guard Billy Cox dropped in 7 markers for the Ramblers.  Referees Jimmy Morgan and Ralph Sundheimer called a total of 13 fouls on St. Joseph and 7 on Strasburg, all the Tigers' penalties being assessed in the 1st half.

39 - Tusky Rolls Over Holmesville 36-23 (3-2-39)

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior Center Fred Blackstone is awarded game honors on his 14 point (6 field goals and 2 free throws) performance in leading his team to a 36-23 triumph over the Holmesville Golden Bears.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers, Midvale Blue Devils and Tuscarawas Broncos, 3 of the county's entrants in the Class B Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall here, barely eked out wins in the tournament opened last night, eliminating 2 of Holmes County and one Carroll County teams.

To say the 3 county teams won is enough in tournament play where one slip means the end, but Strasburg put on a last-minute rally to defeat the Millersburg Knights 44-39, Midvale scored a field goal in the last seconds to defeat the Sherrodsville Rockets 30-29 and Tuscarawas got up enough steam to eliminate the Holmesville Golden Bears 36-23.  The crowd at the opening session was small...not over 500 paid customers attending according to Tournament Manager D.C. Lemmon...but thrills were plentiful for supporters of the competing teams.

In the final game of the evening, the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-1) (18-4)...depended upon 6-foot 4-inch  Senior center Fred Blackstone, to give them a victory over the Holmesville Golden Bears (10-6) of Holmes County.

The game was featured only by the misplaysof the 2 teams, but Tusky mustered enough passwork to lead by 9-4 at the 1st quarter, 18-11 at the half and 22-19 at the 3rd period.  In the final quarter, the Broncos scored 14 points to the Golden Bears' 4 markers to put the game on solid ice.

Blackstone led the scoring with 14 points, while Holmesville forward Vincent was next with 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free tosses).  Jimmy Morgan of New Philadelphia and Ralph Sundheimer of Walnut Creek refereed all games.

39 - Midvale Escapes...Sherrodsville 30-29 (3-2-39)

Midvale Blue Devils Senior Center Bill Stevenson, the team's ace scorer, dropped in 14 points on 5 field goals and 4 free throws in gaining game honors as the Blue Devils just got by the Sherrodsville Rockets 30-29.

DOVER - A mediocre 1st half robbed the Sherrodsville Rockets (19-4) of a victory over the Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (16-7), but it took a field goal in the last few seconds by substitute forward Stafford to give the Blue Devils its 30-29 victory.

Midvale, with Senior forward Big Bill Stevenson clicking regularly, piled up a 9-3 advantage at the 1st quarter and increased it to 19-10 at the half, while the Rockets, getting numerous good shots at the basket, failed to hit on a regular basis.  But, as the 2nd half started, Sherrodsville tossed a man-to man defense on the floor and right then and there Midvale's superiority ceased.

Stevenson couldn't get open nor could his teammates get a good set shot at the basket and when the 3rd stanza was ended the Carroll County team was behind 23-20.  At the start of the final period, Carroll, stocky Sherrodsville forward, dropped 3 action shots and pushed the Rockets into a 29-25 lead with 3 minutes to go.

Baldwin dropped in an action shot for Midvale and forward Frank Morrison a free throw to pull the Blue Devils within one point, but time was going fast and only 10 seconds remained when Stafford attempted a shot from under the basket.  His arm was knocked down by Carroll, but the ball went straight up in the air, bobbled crazily and dropped in to put Midvale in the lead.  Stafford missed the free throw he was awarded on the play.  Defeat for Sherrodsville was even more bitter for in the last few seconds, the Rockets guard Kick hurled a long shot which hit the bankboard, dipped around the hoop and fell off.

Stevenson's 14 points, 13 of which were made in the 1st half, led the scoring for both teams, while Carroll of Sherrodsville was next with 10 points.  Midvale missed 10 of 16 free throws and Sherrodsville 6 of 11.

39 - Strasburg Downs Millersburg 44-39 (3-2-39)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Maurice Bayer led his team to victory over the Millersburg Knights 44-39 and in so doing picked up game honors in the 1st game of the Sectional Tournament.  He picked off 15 points (6 field goals and 3 free throws).

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (5-0) (21-1), the strongest team in the county League this year and winner of the county League and tournament titles, found no soft touch in the Millersburg Knights (9-9) and won the game only through a 3rd period rally before 2 of its best men went out on fouls.

Both teams were hot in the 1st quarter and scored point for point to wind up the period in an 11-11 tie, but in the 2nd stanza, right out of the box, the Burgers took the edge sweeping into a 29-23 lead at intermission.

With Senior forward Maurice Bayer scoring repeatedly on his pivot play, the Tigers grabbed a 36-26 lead late in the 3rd period before Senior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas and Senior guard Blake Roush were ejected on personal fouls and from then on the going got tough.  Strasburg ran the score to 41-28 early in the 4th period and then the Knights ran wild, sinking shots from all angles and stealing the ball for sucker shots to run their score to 39 points with only 2 minutes to play.  But, the rally fizzled out when Senior guard Bob Spidell dropped in a basket and Senior forward Loren Miller scored a free throw shot to give the Tigers their 5-point advantage.

Bayer led the scoring for both teams with 15 points, while Hitchcock, big Spartan center, led Millersburg with 12 (3 field goals and 6 free throws).  Forward Close scored 11 markers for the Knights and Roush made 10 points for the Burgermeisters.

39 - Strasburg Wins 17th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-25-39)

If you wonder why competition in the county league is tough during the entire season as well as the tournament, take a look at the above picture, for here's the pay-off.  The 4 boys pictured above, Bill Stevenson of the Midvale Blue Devils, Earl Crites of the Gnadenhutten Indians, Maurice Bayer of the Strasburg Tigers and Manager Paul Johns of the Tuscarawas Broncos received all the trophies and medals on the table Saturday night.  Midvale won the runner-up trophy and medals, Gnaden won the Sportsmanship Trophy, Strasburg won the League and Tournament Championship trophies and medals and Tusky won the Consolation Trophy.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers won their 8th Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Championship and the Midvale Blue Devils and Tuscarawas Broncos qualified along with the Tigers for Sectional Tournament play this week as the 17th Annual County Basketball Tournament ended at Memorial Hall Saturday night.  A crowd of over 1,500 fans packed the big hall to watch county League ball at its best...and it was far superior Saturday night to any other time in the tournament.

Strasburg, League Champion and loser of only one game during the current season, won a clean-cut victory over Midvale in the final game by a score of 45-33 and Tusky, coming from far behind, edged Gnaden 35-34 in a thrilling battle for Consolation Tournament honors.  The double Championship for 9th-year Head Coach Paul M. Roby's team...Strasburg's 5th "double" under Roby since 1930...added 2 more trophies to the already overflowing display cases at Strasburg High School.

Presentations saw the Tigers take the Championship Trophy, given by The Daily Reporter and the regular League Trophy, donated by E. Fienberg and Company.  In addition, the Strasburg Tigers all received medals furnished by Walter E. Lieser Inc.  Midvale received the Runner-Up Trophy, given by Sanitary Milk and medals furnished by Godfrey Electric, while Tusky received the Consolation Trophy furnished by the S. Toomey Company.

A 5th award, the Sportsmanship Trophy awarded for regular season League play went to Gnaden, coached by Ed Sears in his 2nd year.  The trophy, given by The Daily Times, was awarded on a merit system with school officials and referee judging.  County Superintendent W.E. Laws made the presentations which were under direction of Tournament Manager A.C. Bahler of Sugarcreek.

Although Strasburg won the tournament title Saturday night in a seemingly easy manner after a close 1st half, the Burgers were hard-pressed several times during their other 3 games at the joust.  The Tigers defeated the Bolivar Cardinals 29-24, Gnadenhutten 26-19 and edged the Dundee Bulldogs 28-26 to reach the finals, while Midvale beat the Baltic Eagles 54-32 and Tuscarawas 34-30 to reach the final game.

An unusual feature of the final game was the clean play of the 2 teams...only 11 personal fouls being called on each by Referees "Fizz" Miller and Vic Schreiner and still more unusual was the fact that not one personal foul was called in the 3rd period.  The work of 2 Strasburg players, Senior forward Maurice Bayer and Senior guard Blake Roush and Senior center Big Bill Stevenson of Midvale was outstanding in the game, the 3 collecting a combined total of 44 of the 78 points scored.

Bayer handled his position to near-perfection, dumping in 8 field goals and 3 free throws for 19 points, while Roush, specializing on quick breaks and follow-in shots counted for 12 markers on 5 field goals and 2 free throws.  Stevenson, well-bottled by the Strasburg crew and carrying much of his team's load, still was good enough to shoot and tip in 6 field goals and a foul toss for 13 points to lead tournament scoring.  He scored 55 points in 3 games.

The Strasburg Tigers (4-0) (46-9) opened the scoring and led in the 1st period, but the Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) (26-14) matched and overcame the lead before the Tigers went to work again and the quarter ended in an 8-8 tie.  The 2nd quarter saw both teams warm up and keep the net singing as they matched basket for basket in a thrilling display of speed, but the Tigers were ahead 21-19 at  intermission.

The Blue Devils, which was doing a good job of penetrating the Strasburg zone defense in the 1st half, found itself checked at every turn in the 3rd stanza and fell behind 31-25 at the quarter's end.  Then in the final period, the Tigers turned on the heat, looking impressive for the 1st time during the tournament as they showered the basket with field goals from every angle and when it was over they had scored 14 points to 8 for Midvale.
