42 - Bolivar Takes The Measure of Dundee 31-27 (2-27-42)
Bolivar Cardinals Junior Forward Warren Klink claimed game honors in scoring 15 points and leading the Cardinals to victory over the Dundee Bulldogs 31-27 and putting the team into the Tournament Consolation Championship game tonight. The Junior now has 58 points in tournament play and is averaging 14.5 points a game.
DOVER - It's Gnaden and Tuscarawas for the Championship and Bolivar and Strasburg for the Consolation title at Memorial Hall tonight when the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament comes to an end. The night's session saw 2 games played and a crowd of only 355 paid customers present for a hot and exciting fight in which the Strasburg Tigers eliminated a driving Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirate team 39-38, while Bolivar put the end on a listless Dundee Cardinal team 31-27.
The Cardinals, upset by the Tuscarawas Broncos in their opening game of the tourney, are expected to defeat Strasburg for the Consolation title, but the Tigers are not completely without a chance. Tournament Manager Harold Everett said he expected a packed house for the title games and announced that doors will be opened at 6:30PM. Trophies will be presented at the half of the final contest.
The Bolivar Cardinals (3-1) (30-23) and Dundee Bulldogs (1-2) (16-27) game was not nearly so interesting; although, the Bulldogs snapped out of their lethargy in the 2nd period to take a commanding 15-10 lead, but slumped again in the 3rd. Bolivar led 8-4 at the 1st period, but was held to a single field goal in the 2nd quarter after losing center Russ Ross on personal fouls. The Cardinals came out in the 3rd quarter with a 15-point splurge to lead 25-19. They led 29-19 once in the final period before Dundee ran up its count in the final few minutes.
Junior Warren Klink, star Cardinal forward, sparked the Bolivar attack with 15 points, while forward Calvin Jones got 7. Forward Milton Fruchey and center Paul Jones were high for Dundee with 6 points each.
The game was rough, Bolivar taking 15 personals and losing center Class and Jones, while Dundee took 19, losing Fruchey and guard Junior "Buck" Machan in the final quarter. The Cardinals made only 7 of 16 free throws, missing 7 straight in the final period, while the Bulldogs dropped in 9 of 15.
Referees Earl Schreiber of Canton and John Gaborof Alliance officiated both games.

DOVER - The surprise of the tournament was pulled out of the bag last night by Sugarcreek-Shanesville, twice defeated by Strasburg in regular season play, when they put up such a stiff battle only to lose out in the last minute. The Pirates were to lead the Tigers for the first 3 quarters.
The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-2) (34-23) played the Strasburg Tigers (2-1) (53-13) to a standstill in the 1st period, leading once 8-4 before taking a 13-12 lead at the quarter's end. And with Senior guard Bob Immel potting 3 straight long shots, the Pirates took a 23-19 lead at the half. They continued to lead in the 3rd period as Strasburg cut the margin to 30-28 as the quarter closed. Senior guard Ken Houtz scored a fielder for Strasburg as the final period opened and forward Ray Blick scored a free throw to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a 31-30 edge.
Houtz and Junior center Carl Yackey each scored buckets for the Tigers to take a 34-31 lead, but Blick and center Junior Trachsel hit with fielders and the Pirates regained the lead 35-34. Again Strasburg went in front, Yackey scoring a free throw and Senior guard Dick Welsch a field goal, but Blick potted another fielder to knot the count at 37-all. Then Sophomore forward Glen Stille sank a short shot to give Strasburg a 39-37 lead with one minute to to. Guard Bill Mast missed a free throw for Sugarcreek-Shanesville and then Immel got 2 shots when fouled by Stille. He dropped the 1st one, making the score 39-38, but missed the 2nd and Strasburg successfully stood-off the last-minute threat.
The Pirates, during the hectic last few minutes, had several scoring opportunities, but the ball refused to drop through the hoop. The summary shows the Tigers winning by sinking 9 of 16 free throws, while Sugarcreek-Shanesville made only 6 of 15. The Pirates scored 16 field goals to 15 for Strasburg. The winners were assessed 10 personals and the losers 14. Trachsel going out in the final quarter for the Pirates.
Yackey was high scorer for Strasburg with 12 points, but Houtz, who scored 11 of the Tigers' 20 points in the final half was the Tiger star. Welsch scored 10. Immel and Blick shared game honors for Sugarcreek-Shanesville, each getting 13 points each, while Trachsel was close behind with 9.

42 - Bolivar Is Back With 51-33 Jolt Over Stone Creek (2-26-42)
Bolivar Cardinals star player Junior Forward Warren Klink won game honors leading his team to a thumping of the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 51-33 by dropping in 21 points. Klink has gathered 43 points in tournament play this year and now has an average of 14.3 points per game. He has accumulated 109 points in tourney play since his sensational Freshman year.
DOVER - With a packed house looking on, the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Tuscarawas Broncos won their way into the Sectional Tournament here next week and moved a step nearer the County Championship by taking winning games in the fast waning County Class B Tournament at Memorial Hall here last night.
The Indians rated as tournament favorties, were pushed to the wall by the Dundee Bulldogs and won 44-29 only after coming from behind to stage an emotional 17-point rally in the final 6 minutes of the game. The Broncos had it comparatively easy sailing to a win over the Strasburg Tigers 41-27 in the other semi-final.
Consolation contests saw the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates remain in the running by eliminating the Baltic Eagles 38-18, led by guard Bill Mast who scored 10 points, leading the Eagles at all stages and the Bolivar Cardinals, upset by Tuscarawas last Saturday night, regained their stride to eliminate the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 51-33.
The Bolivar Cardinals (2-1) (29-23), with Junior forward Warren Klink getting 21 points, swept over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (2-2) (9-19) in their Consolation Division contest after leading by only 22-18 at halftime. In the 1st quarter the Cardinal scoring machine appeared amassing 14 points as well as the Bolivar defense who held the Panthers to just 3 points. In the 2nd period, the Golden Panthers scoring picked up when they poured in 15 points to the Red Bird's 8 points. The 3rd period matched the 1st stanza with Bolivar hitting 12 points and the Cardinal defense kicked in again holding Stone Creek to just 1 point...Bolivar 34-19. Both teams played evenly during the 4th and final quarter with the Cardinals hitting 17 points to Stone Creek's 14 markers as the Golden Panthers ended their season.
Forward Calvin Jones followed up Bolivar's Klink with 14 points in their win. For Stone Creek, high scoring forward Bill Ridenour picked up 17 points in leading his team in a losing cause. Forward Ralph Kilchenmann followed with 9 and center K. Buehler followed that with another 7 points. Ridenour, had 24 points in his 1st game and missed the next 2 Panther games due to catching the measles and only returned to the lineup last night.

42 - Gnaden Gets A Scare From Dundee 44-29 (2-26-42)
Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Center John Metzger picks up game honors by scoring 12 points while leading the Indians to a decisive victory over the Dundee Bulldogs 44-21. Metzger has scored 25 points in tournament play, an average of 12.5 points per game.
DOVER - Although Gnadenhutten, with a record of 10 straight League wins and a season record of 20 out of 21 games has been rated as a hot tournament favorite, the Indians Championship game with the Tuscarawas Broncos tomorrow night can easily be called a toss-up. Tusky has been getting stronger every minute and the scare Dundee threw into the Indians last night only served to make the Bronco backers more confident their team has a good chance to win the title.
The biggest crowd of the tournament, a total of 1,410 admissions and slightly less than the 1,456 of last year's session, saw the best basketball of the tourney last night when the Gnaden and Dundee fought it out in the feature game. It was brother against brother with 1st-Year Head Coach Ken Gartrell's Dundee Bulldogs (1-1) (16-26) giving 3rd-Year Head Coach Ralph W. (Blondie) Gartrell's Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (29-23) (22-1) all they wanted for 3 periods and snatching the lead away from them in the final only to fade before Gnaden's 17-point splurge.
The score was tied no less than 6 times during the contest, the 2 teams trading almost basket for basket throughout the 1st three periods. Dundee led at the 1st period 7-5, but Gnaden held the Bulldogs to 3 points and took a 14-11 lead at halftime. The 3rd period saw the Indians increase the count to 18-11 before Dundee got going. The Bulldogs tallied and tied the score at 24-all with one minute to go in the 3rd stanza, but Gnaden led at the period end 27-25.
The final period saw Dundee take a 29-27 lead with 6 minutes remaining, but that ended it...the Bulldogs cracked which opened the door and the Indians, with Junior guard Ken Kohl sinking 3 long shots with dead-eye accuracy, ran their count up to 41 with Dundee going scoreless. Senior John Metzger, star Indian center, was high scorer for his team with 12 points, while little Junior guard Bill Lockett, who scored 10, sparkled for Gnadenhutten. Senior forward Bill Schreiner got 11 points, Kohl 8 and Senior forward Don Miller 3. Junior Ralph Long, regular forward, was ill with an attack of the measles. Center Paul Jones was high scorer for Dundee with 10 points, as guard Junior "Buck" Machan was next with 7 and the clever forward Milton Fruchey scored 6.
Seven personals were called on the Indians and 12 on the Bulldogs losing Machan in the final minutes. Gnaden scored 8 of 15 free throws and Dundee made 3 of 9.

42 - Tuscarawas Stings Bolivar 42-29 (2-21-42)
DOVER - With only 4 teams remaining in regular tournament play and 4 others still fighting for the Consolation title, the Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament will resume play on Thursday night with the Champion Gnadenhutten Indians, Dundee Bulldogs, Strasburg Tigers and the Tuscarawas Broncos battling it out for the Championship.
Only one of the favorites was missing from the regular tourney list after the first 10 games. The Bolivar Cardinals, only team to defeat Gnaden this year, fell before Tuscarawas 42-29 in Saturday night's featured game. The Broncos, who finished the League Season in a tie with the Red Birds, won the game on foul shots after piling up a big 1st half advantage.
The other 2 games were in the Consolation Division. The Stone Creek Golden Panthers, playing without their star, forward Bill Ridenour, eliminated the Midvale Blue Devils, a semi-finalist in last year's State Tournament, 32-29 in a rip-roaring overtime game and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates eliminated the Port Washington Purple Riders 41-19. The Mineral City Tigers were eliminated on Friday night by the Baltic Eagles 28-15.
A total of 792 persons paid to see Saturday night's session as compared with 765 for last year's session, Tournament Manager Harold Everett of Tuscarawas reported.
The Bolivar Cardinals (1-1) (28-23)-Tuscarawas Broncos (2-0) (17-23) game, was scheduled to be one of the best of the tourney, failed completely and the Broncos, with Senior forward Charles Myers scoring 7 field goals and 8 free throws for 22 points, won handily on a 1st half splurge of 26 points. The Broncos, with Myers bolting through the Bolivar defense for short shots and rifling in long ones from the side, were ahead 14-7 at the 1st period and then put on a sweeping rally the final 4 minutes of the 2nd to grab a 26-12 advantage at halftime.
Bolivar, bogged down by personal fouls and way off in the shooting department, had its chance in the 2nd half, but couldn't click. Early in the 3rd period the Red Birds got within 9 points at 30-21. Aided by 2 technical fouls, Tusky went way in front 36-23 as the period ended, putting the game on ice. Both teams scored even from the field with 12 field goals apiece, but Tuscarawas sank 16 of 25 free throws, while Bolivar was making only 3 of its allotted 12 charity tosses.
Referees Ed Adams of Akron and John Gabor of Alliance assessed 18 personals upon Bolivar, infliction of the penalties causing one technical because of crowd conduct and another for player conduct. The Cardinals lost Gil Augsberger, Calvin Jones and Bill Zutavern. The Broncos scored 10 of their field goals in the 1st half, while Bolivar got only 5. The Red Birds scored 8 in the 2nd half and missed many more, while the Broncos were picking up 3.
