60 - The Semi-Finals To Be Led By Caviness and Stingel
DENNISON - The highest scorers in Tuscarawas and Garaway High School history will be featured in the semi-finals of the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament when action resumes tomorrow night at Dennison. Gary Caviness, who has tallied 1,385 points in 4 seasons with the Tuscarawas Broncos including 402 this season, will lead the Broncos against the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans in the opening tussle at 7:30.
Charley (Chuck) Stingel, who has dumped in 1,137 markers during a similar period with the Garaway Pirates, will play a key role as his League Champion Pirate teammates face the recharged Strasburg Tigers in the nightcap at 8:45. Both of tomorrow night's victors will enter next week's Sectional Class A Tournament competition scheduled here next Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights. However, they'll return to action on Saturday night at 8:00 to determine a League Tournament Champion.
Drawings for the Sectional event will be held in Helmkamps Restaurant here Sunday following a 5:30 dinner. Qualifiers, in addition to the pair from Tuscarawas County, will include 2 from Holmes County, one from Carroll County and the winner of the non-exempt Tuscarawas County Tournament which will conclude tonight at Dennison. The Hiland Hawks and the Killbuck Bucks, which meet on Friday night for the Holmes County title, already have qualified for the meet.
While Caviness is the only Tuscarawas cager to average in twin figures this season, team balance prevailed last Saturday when Tusky nipped the Baltic Eagles 51-49 to gain the semi-final round. The Broncos have won 11 of 19 starts. TV, 60-54 victor over the Tusky Broncos in regular season play, has a trio of men up high on the scoring list. Clarence Cantrell tops the pack with 312 points, diminutive Ron Lake has 248 and Jim Studer has collared 234 points.
Head Coach Bob Heller's Trojans, victors in 14 of 18 starts, pounded out an 82-71 decision over the Port Washington Purple Riders in their tournament bow last Friday night. Garaway's 18 victories in 19 games includes 65-51 and 61-37 decisions over the Bengals during regular season competition, but the Corsairs will have to go at top speed to duplicate the feat tomorrow night. Strasburg pulled a 57-53 surprise against the Midvale Blue Devils in its tournament debut to chalk up its 8th win in 19 games, while Garaway eliminated the Gnadenhutten Indians 79-69.
Stingel, despite the fact that his career total is high, isn't the top Garaway scorer this season. Koran Zehnder paces the parade with 382 points, a new Garaway single season record. Stingel has tallied 253 points this year. Frank Wallick is the Strasburg offensive kingpin, having delivered a total of 331 points.
