60 - Sectional Tournament Drawings
DOVER - The Garaway Pirates (20-1) and the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (17-1) were seeded, drawing byes in 1st-round play, when drawings for the Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament were held in Helmkamp's Restaurant here yesterday. The tournament will open tomorrow night at 7:30 in Memorial Hall when the Malvern Green Hornets (8-9) and the Hiland Hawks (20-2) tangle in upper bracket competition.
The No. 2 teams of Tuscarawas and Holmes counties, the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (15-5) and the Killbuck Bucks (15-5), will meet in the 2nd game at 8:45. The Pirates of Garaway, which annexed the Tuscarawas County Crown last Saturday, won't be in action until Saturday night when it meets the Tusky Valley-Killbuck winner at 8:00 in lower bracket competition. Saturday's winner advances to the District Tournament at Brilliant.
The Blue Waves will meet the Green Hornets-Hawks winner Friday at 8:00 for the other District trip. This Sectional's representatives will meet those from the Brilliant Tournament on March 9-11.
As a result of an early draw, pairings for the Brilliant joust are predetermined with respective bracket winners meeting. The Dover upper meets Brilliant's lower victor and vice versa.
Drawings for Brilliant's event were also conducted yesterday. The Tiltonsville Ramblers (9-10) and Yorkville Ductillites (12-9) were pitted in the upper bracket and will clash in the tourney opener on Wednesday.
The Brilliant Blue Devils (17-4) and Jewett Wildcats (15-5) of the lower bracket, will meet in the 2nd game. The Conotton Valley Rockets (17-4) drew the upper bracket bye and will meet the Ramblers-Ductillites winner in Friday's opening game. The Powhatan Point Indians (13-4) tangles with the Blue Devils-Wildcats victor in the 2nd contest, with both winners advancing to District play.
A seldom used State Ruling went into effect at the local draw yesterday. It rules that No. 2 teams from the same County Tournament can meet in the opening round of Sectional Tournament play.
Killbuck and Hiland were paired opposite when the drawings followed. Prior to the draw coaches had decided that in the event of such an occurrence the No. 2 team in the upper bracket (TV) and the No. 4 team in the lower bracket (the Hawks) would switch spots.
Thus the reason for the Trojans and Pirates being in the same bracket. The end result could be a possible 5th meeting of Garaway and Tuscarawas Valley in the finals. They met twice in regular season play and in Saturday night's county final.
