DENNISON - The Garaway Pirates and the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans will carry Tuscarawas County hopes into future Class A Tournament play.  The squads, finishing No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, in League warfare this season, gained that distinction by nabbing victories in last night's county semi-finals in the Dennison High School Gymnasium before a screaming  crowd of more than 1,800 fans.

The Pirates let loose with a finishing kick that left the Tigers far behind in a 79-56 decision.  The Trojans, playing in the opener of last night's card, trampled the Tuscarawas Broncos by an almost identical margin 75-53.

Drawings for the event, which also includes Holmes County representatives, the Hiland Hawks and the Killbuck Bucks, non-county tournament victor the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves and the winner of tonight's Augusta Blue Devils and Malvern Green Hornets game in Carroll County, will be conducted at a dinner session tomorrow at 5:30 in Helmkamp's Restaurant here.  But first things come first...and the first thing on the agenda is tonight's Tuscarawas County final which is regarded important by both the Corsairs and Spartans.

The game is slated to begin at 8:00 after which award presentations will be made by tournament Director County School Supt. W.E. Laws.  This is TVs 2nd trip to the finals in as many years.  Last year, Head Coach Bob Heller's crew lost 65-43 in the windup against the Midvale Blue Devils.

One thing the Red, Black and White has in their favor is the law of averages.  During regular season competition, the Maroon and Gray won 77-68 and 73-60 decisions.  The Garaway Pirates, under its consolidated banner, is making its debut in final night competition.

Sugaracreek-Shaneville, one of the schools consolidated under the new title, gained the big night in 1947, but lost to the Bengals of Strasburg.  The same thing occurred in 1945.  The last Sugarcreek-Shanesville title came in the 1944 season when that team went all the way to Regional Tournament play, having been undefeated through 26 straight contests.

The Dundee Bulldogs, the other school involved in the consolidation, participated in the Championship tussle in 1941, losing to the Blue Devils of Midvale, in 1934, losing to the Strasburg Tigers and in 1928 losing to the Tigers again.  It has never annexed the coveted title.  The Bolivar Cardinals, which consolidated with the Mineral City Tigers under the Tuscarawas Valley Flag, won the title twice and was runner-up 5 other times.  The Tigers of Mineral City never was a Tournament Champion, but was runner-up in 1949, its lone such trip.

The Pirates of Garaway entered tonight's contest with a 19-1 record and the Trojans with a 15-4 mark.

The Garaway Pirates (2-0) (8-0) (19-1) put on a splendid show, exhibiting the latest in what it takes to stop an upset hungry opponent.  The Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (4-4) (8-12) felt the brunt of that type of play last night after a brilliant bid to stop the tournament favorites.

Rallying in the 2nd frame after falling behind 17-11 at the end of the 1st quarter, the Tigers tied the count at 27-27 with 22 seconds remaining in the half.  The Corsairs retaliated and took a "powder" with a slim 29-27 margin.  The Bengals scored the 1st basket in the 3rd stanza to tie the score again.

But, it was no go.  The Garaway Pirates poise suddenly appeared like a brilliant meteor.  Taking the situation well in hand it thwarted the Strasburg Tigers by scoring 5 straight points.  It increased the margin and led 53-39 at the end of the 3rd quarter, ending the Bengal season.

Senior 5-10 Koran Zehnder; although, failing to connect in the 2nd period, turned in another top notch performance, ending with 30 points.  Jim Gerber's play under the boards was a highlight of the contest in the well-oiled Pirate point machine.  He added 9 points as did Senior Charles Stingel.

Bob Raber's driving thrusts resulted in 18 points and 6-0 Junior Tom Andreas counted 13 markers.  Senior 5-6 Don Grove, who sparkled at his guard post for Strasburg, topped the Tigers in the point department with 15.  Senior 6-4 Frank Wallick added 14 and Sophomore Jim Clymer knocked down 11.

Garaway meshed 34 of 79 field attempts for 43.1 percent and added 11 free throws in 25 tries.  Strasburg made 23 of 72 from the floor for 31.9 percent and 10 of 12 charity tosses.
