All-Ohio Clarence Yackey leaps high into the air to tally 2 points for the Strasburg Champion Tigers in Saturday's tourney final with the Midvale Blue Devils. Standing and waiting for a possible rebound is Tom Haswell (52), Bengal guard, Dave Rennicker (8) and Bob Sherrell (7) of Midvale fail in their attempt to halt the Tiger ace who tallied 21 points.
Jackpot Award. Midvale's captain, Jack Ford, holds 2 trophies won by the Blue Devils this year. One trophy, the New Philadelphia Daily Times Trophy, was awarded the Blue Devils for winning the County League title this year and the other given by the Sanitary Milk Company of Dover and Canton, was awarded Midvale for the tournament runner-up spot. Twenty-one-year-old Head Coach Bill French of the Devils beams as he stands beside his star performer.
DOVER - The Strasburg Mighty Tigers (4-0) (25-2) (73-17), Tuscarawas County Tournament Champions for the 4th consecutive year as a result of Saturday night's hard-won 42-30 victory over a fighting Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) (22-3) (44-24) quintet, prepared today to defend their Sectional Tournament crown, Bengal-owned for the past 2 years, in the tourney which starts on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall and for which drawings were held Sunday afternoon in the Dover High School building.
Strasburg will be idle for the 1st two nights of the Sectional joust and will meet the winner of Wednesday's Dennison Railroaders-Walnut Creek Cardinals' tilt Friday at 8:30PM. Midvale, County League Champions and tourney runner-up, will make its Sectional bow Thursday at 7:30PM against the victor of the Wednesday Berlin Blue Jays-Dennison St. Mary's clash.
The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, Consolation Division winners by a resounding 64-48 margin over the Dundee Bulldogs Saturday night, will meet the Millersburg Knights Wednesday at 8PM in the 1st round of Sectional play. The Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers, the 6th Tuscarawas County entry, collides with the Carrollton Warriors Thursday at 8:30PM
In annexing its 4th consecutive tournament title before 1,326 fans in Memorial Hall Saturday night, Strasburg was forced to the limit by a scrappy, sharp-breaking quintet of Midvale Blue Devils who repeatedly threatened to overhaul the favored Bengals. Strasburg power; however, spearheaded by 6-6 All-Ohio Senior center Clarence Yackey whose brilliant performance under the baskets not only netted him 20 points, but also proved to be the defensive bulwark necessary to halt the Midvale offense, was too great for Head Coach Bill French's courageous Blue Devils.
Midvale held the lead for only a brief period in the initial quarter when Junior forward Jim Golder broke the ice with a dribble in shot which swished through the nets and gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 marginal lead. Strasburg quickly erased this margin as Senior forward Roland Malcuit dropped one through from mid-court and Sophomore guard John Haswell and Yackey penetrated the Midvale defenses to tally action shots. Midvale was held scoreless from the field for the remainder of the quarter, while Senior guard Tom Haswell was meshing a pair of field goals and Yackey added 3 points from the free throw line to give the Bengals a 13-4 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
Junior forward Jack Ford, Blue Devils offensive ace, held scoreless in the initial canto, found the range in the 2nd period as he racked up 3 doubledeckers and a free throw toss to spark a Midvale rally that trimmed the Strasburg margin to 23-16 at halftime, but deuces under the nets by Yackey and field goals by Malcuit and John Haswell protected the Tiger lead.
In the 3rd stanza, Midvale could tally only 4 points, while the Tigers attack; although, badly harassed by the Blue Devils' pressing defense, rolled up 9 points, giving the Champions a 32-20 margin. Seven markers of the Tiger total in this period were sunk by the towering Yackey as he ranged under the basket to net 3 fielders on pivot shots and follow-ups and added one more from the foul line.
For a brief time in the early stages of the final quarter, Midvale staged a rally that threatened to overtake the Bengals. Ford netted a field goal and little Senior guard Dan Carlisle sent a field goal through the nets. Ford counted again from the field and the Tiger margin had been trimmed to 32-25. Fielders by John and Tom Haswell pulled the Tigers out of the hole and they maintained their margin for the remainder of the stanza. Yackey led both teams in scoring with his 20 points, while Ford collected 13 of the Midvale total.
