23 - Mineral City Tigers Defeats Bolivar Cardinals 27-9 (3-10-23)

DOVER - On Saturday, March 10, 1932, the very 1st Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament took place with 3 games in the afternoon and 3 more in the evening.  Bolivar and Mineral City were the 1st teams to play in the tournament.  The tournament was arranged by the Dover Chamber of Commerce and conducted by the Tuscarawas County School Board, on the Legion floor in Dover.  Mineral City was the 1st team to win a tournament game.  Although only a small crowd would see the basketball festival, the tournament was entirely successful and arrangements would already be made to repeat it here next year.  Strasburg and Mineral City would have the biggest rooting delegations on hand through the tourney.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School Pirates was looked upon as a strong contender for honors, but was unable to participate due to most of the players being ill.

The tournament opened with Mineral City (1-0) meeting Bolivar (0-1) and it proved a walk-away for the Mineral City quintet.  Markley and Weaver of Mineral City did the bulk of the scoring with broad, blond center (Weaver) of the Tiger team controlling the game pretty much to suit himself.  The Bolivar boys were too small to compete with their opponents; although, they put up a good fight to the very end.  The feature of the game was a long shot by Steenrod, Bolivar center, in the 1st quarter.  The first quarter ended 6-2, with the score 11-4 at the half and the 3rd quarter ended 19-6.  Kline and Steenrod of the Cardinals were the only players on their team to score.  Kline picked up 5 points and Steenrod swished 4 points.  The Tigers were led by Weaver with 9 points, while Markley contributed 8.

NOTE:  During the early years, it took only 4 fouls to foul out in a game and players could re-enter a game only once.  It wasn't until 1937 that jumpball was eliminated after each field goal.  These were some of the reasons for the low scoring during those years.  There was no county Class B League for the 1922-23 season.
