Tournament Update

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers and Dundee Bulldogs today were the survivors of the regular rounds of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.  The teams will meet in the Championship contest at 8:45 tonight at Legion Hall to decide which will be the title holder.

Dundee reached the top rung in its steady climb by defeating the Mineral City Tigers 24-21 last night at Legion Hall.  The defending champions, Strasburg Tigers had little trouble burying the Midvale Blue Devils under a 31-16 score.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates won its way to the final in the Consolation Tournament by defeating the tough Tuscarawas Broncos 20-14, after the plucky Tusky team had swamped the Port Washington Purple Riders 31-10 in the 1st of its 2 games.

Midvale today will meet the winner of the Stone Creek Panthers-Mineral City Tigers fracas.  The victor then will play Sugarcreek-Shanesville in the Consolation Championship at 8PM tonight.  About 1,000 attended last night's session of the tournament.

34 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Takes Tusky 20-14 (2-23-34)

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-1) (16-9) started off slowly in this Consolation contest, but picked up momentum to plaster the Tuscarawas Broncos (2-2) (3-13) 20-14 as the Broncos seemed to be worn and weary following their last Consolation game.  The Pirates were ahead from beginning to end.  Things were tight in the 1st quarter at 3-2, but in the 2nd quarter, Sugarcreek-Shanesville picked up their firepower and tightened their defense holding Tusky scoreless.  In the 3rd, the Broncos picked up 6 points and held the Pirates to 3 and the quarter ended 14-8.

Senior forward Harold "Ted" Arnold was high scorer for Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free throws), while Senior guard Dean "Squirt" Norris, long shot artist, tallied with 4 points on 2 field goals.  Junior forward Calvin Knisely and Senior Tom De Cottis did the bulk of the scoring for Tuscarawas with 4 points each (2 field goals apiece).  Held without a single score in the 2nd period, the Broncos bagged 6 points in the 3rd and repeated in the final stanza.  With the exception of the 3rd quarter, the Pirates scored consistently.

34 - Strasburg Iron-Men Knocks Off Midvale 31-16 (2-23-34)

DOVER - The Mighty Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (28-5) were off to a slow start, but beginning with its regular scoring tactics in the 2nd quarter had little trouble disposing the Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) (10-6) by 15 points, 31-16.  The Tigers led all the way.  The score showed 5-2 in the 1st quarter, 19-7 in the 2nd quarter and 25-13 in the 3rd.

The Midvale players were unable to bottle up Senior forward John "Johnny" Studer who piled up 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw), while guard Bud Reiger went "hot" and tallied another 10 points (4 filed goals and 2 foul shots).  Forward Frank Cox was the Blue Devil mainstay with 8 points, 2 field goals and 4 free throws.  Junior forward Paul Brumholtz, sturdy little player, was the handy man for Midvale.  The Tigers continued to display their snappy passing and speedy offense with Junior center George Denzer the key passer.  Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller also stood out for the Tigers with his flashy floor game.

NOTE:  Paul Baumholtz, sterling forward of the Midvale cagers, fractured an elbow in the game with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates last week, but played the entire game without telling anyone about it.  Last night he again played with the injured elbow and was among the leading passers of the Blue Devils.

34 - Flashy Dundee Defeats Mineral City 24-21 (2-23-34)

DOVER - Head Coach Glen Jone's Dundee Bulldogs (2-0) (9-11)...showing effecive passing and making good their scoring chances...took an early lead over the Head Coach Bob Mackey Mineral City Tigers (1-1) (3-11) and marched to a 24-21 victory.  They got a small margin early in the game, widened it in the 2nd period and then kept a few points ahead of the Tigers the remainder of the game.  The Bulldogs led the entire contest.  They led 6-3 in the 1st, 11-5 at the half and 15-12 at the end of he 3rd.

Mineral City collected 9 points in the final quarter in a rally that was cut short by the sweeping Dundee offense.  Senior forward Paul Baker was the spark of the Dundee passing and scoring with 8 points (4 field goals).  Sam Fetters also tallied 8 points on 2 field goals and 4 free throws.  Leading Mineral City was guard Dick Wilson who garnered 7 points, 2 field goals and 3 free throws.  Center Bill "Legs" Sattler was completely cornered by a clever 3-man close-up and held to but 1 field goal and collected another point with a free throw.  The Tigers head to the Consolation Tournament.

34 - Tusky Trounces Port 31-10 (2-23-34)

DOVER - Head Coach Charmus Davis' Tuscarawas Broncos (2-1) (3-12) were peppy in their 1st Consolation game, turning back the feeble offerings of Head Coach Harold Young's Port Washington Purple Riders (1-2) (3-9) with little difficulty and winning 31-10.  The Purple Riders were helpless before the Bronco attack which Junior center Earl Schumacher led with 10 points (5 field goals).  Junior guard Ken Tschudy was 2nd high for Tusky with 7 points (2 field goals and 3 free throws.

Senior guard Lewis Decker was responsible for 7 of the Port Washington marks (3 field goals and a free throw).  While Tuscarawas stacked up its points, the Purple Riders were able to get 5 points in the 1st quarter and the same number during the remaining 3 quarters.  The Broncos led 11-5 in the 1st period, 17-6 at the half and 23-8 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

34 - Tuscarawas County Tournament Update

DOVER - Featuring the upset of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates by the Midvale Blue Devils, the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament put on an 8-game show of 12 contenders, while boiling it down to 4 semi-finalists at Legion Hall Saturday afternoon and night.  While 8 of the original 12 teams are still playing, only 4 of them are competing for the regular tournament honors in the regular channels.  The other 4, to be joined by the losing semi-finalists next week, are still in the Consolation race added to this year's program.

The semi-finalists, who play next Friday night, are the Strasburg Tigers, Dundee Bulldogs, Mineral City Tigers and Midvale.  Strasburg will play Midvale and Dundee will match wits with Mineral City in the semi-finals and the 2 winners will meet Saturday night.  Dundee reached its present status by nosing out the Stone Creek Panthers 32-30 Saturday afternoon in a 2nd-round game, both schools having drawn byes from the 1st round.  Strasburg got there by winning a 2nd round game from the Port Washington Purple Riders 49-9 Saturday night.  Mineral City made the grade through a 43-16 victory over the Baltic Eagles.  And, Midvale did it by upsetting Sugarcreek-Shanesville 33-24 Saturday night.

The winner and runner-up of the regular tournament and the winner of the Consolation Tournament will qualify to enter the Northern Section competition of the Eastern Ohio Sectional at Legion Hall March 1,2 and 3.  Earl "Monk" Gross, New Philadelphia, is refereeing all regular tournament games.  Ken Mathias, also of New Philadelphia, a popular member of the official staff of the Class B League, is working all Consolation games.

34 - Consolation Tournament Update

DOVER - Under the Consolation Tournament plan which was made a part of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament this year, each team must lose 2 games before it is turned completely away from the chance to go to the Sectional Tournament and thus far, only the Baltic Eagles, Bolivar Cardinals, Gnadenhutten Indians and New Cumberland Trojans have been shoved out the door.  In Saturday's contests, Gnadenhutten defeated Bolivar 27-19, but was eliminated by the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 27-21; New Cumberland lost to the Tuscarawas Broncos 33-11; and Baltic fell before the Stone Creek Panthers 21-11.  Thus Tuscarawas, Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Stone Creek and the Port Washington Purple Riders...which will play its 1st Consolation game next Friday...are left in the race.  They will be joined by the losing semi-finalists of the regular tournament next week.

A juggled lineup which shifted John Harmon from guard to forward and Harold Arnold from forward to guard was presented by Sugarcreek-Shanesville as the Pirates eliminated Gnaden 27-21 Saturday night.  The shifted Harmon scored 8 points to lead the field in scoring.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville led the entire way.  It seemed a case of who-can-run-the-longest-wins-the-game in the Baltic-Stone Creek fray which the latter club copped by a 21-11 count after trailing through the 1st half.  They led 11-0 at the start of the final period and scored 10 points in it, while holding the Eagles to two.  Paul Wherley of Stone Creek was high scorer with 7 points.  Ike Sruchen of Gnadenhutten scored 18 points and Paul Class of Bolivar led 16-13 at the half and the Indians led 23-17 at he start of the final period.  The youngsters who wore the colors of New Cumberland were hardly a match for the experienced Tuscarawas tossers and were humbled 33-11 in their final appearance.  The Broncos Head Coach Charmus Davis substituted freely, but any combnation he used outscored the Trojans.  Ralph Moore and Allen Veigel of Tusky tied for scoring honors with 8 points each.
