57 - Midvale Trashes Tuscarawas 97-55 (2-11-57)
The 1st tip-off of the 35th Annual Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament looks almost even in the picture as Sophomore Tom Vesco (11) of the Tuscarawas Broncos battles with Senior John Colombo (7) of the Midvale Blue Devils for the tip. Others shown in the photo are Senior Dave De Mattio (left) of the Blue Devils, Sophomore Rich Robinson of the Broncos and Sophomore Tom Krocker of the Diablos. The Midvale Blue Devils' basketball fans last night had plenty to cheer about as their Blue Devils rapped out an easy victory over the Tuscarawas Broncos 97-55. But by the looks on their faces they would rather have seen a close game, with their team winning of course. (Photo by The Daily Reporter)
DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (10-9) (67-30) whose one-two punch of Seniors Dick (Dandy) Leggett and John Colombo was just too much for the Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) (1-18) (46-44) as the pair of sharp-shooting lads blazed the nets throughout the contest to pace their team to the rather easy victory. Leggett tossed in 11 field goals and 8 free throws for 30 points, while Colombo was right behind with 10 action shots and 9 free throw tosses for 29 markers as they were the only 2 winning players to score in double figures.
The Blue Devils battled their way to a 1st quarter lead of 21-18 as the rapidly improving Broncos put up a game fight those first 8 minutes. But the odds were too great to overcome for the young Buckless Broncs and the cagers of Head Coach Pete Hilliard turned on the steam in romping to victory. With Leggett and Colombo pacing the way with their shooting and 6-2 Russ Hobart and 6-1 Gary Haney providing the rebound strength, the winners reached to a strong 42-26 half time lead.
The losers made qa game attempt to start a rally in the 3rd stanza, but the offensive punch of Midvale came through and they poured 39 points through the hoops to hold a more lopsided 81-42 margin going into the final quarter. The Reserves dotted the lineup throughout the 2nd half as 12 players saw action for the Diablos.
The scoring was well rounded for Tuscarawas with Sophomore Tom Vesco leading with 16 points and Freshman Gary Caviness following with 15. Senior Ed Hill added 12 more to the losing cause of Head Coach Stan Culp's charges.
