55 - Strasburg Reserves Slaps Millersburg 89-68 (3-4-55)

DOVER - A choice double header is on the basketball menu in the Class B Sectional Tournament at Memorial Hall here tonight as 3 Tuscarawas County teams and one club from Holmes County vie for the 2 berths in next week's District jousts which will also be staged in Dover.  The Baltic Eagles face the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs for the 3rd time when the 2 teams tangle in the opener of the twin bill at 7:30, while the contest between the Strasburg Tigers and Dennison's Railroaders is expected to produce plenty of fireworks.

The Eagles lost 66-65 and 68-63 verdicts to the Bulldogs in the regular season, while the Tigers and Railroaders did not meet.  The fact that the Bengals will be out to pin a defeat onto the Roaders of Head Coach Chuck Lorenz will be the feature in the 2nd contest.  Lorenz'  Tuscarawas team of last season was the club which put 2 smears on an otherwise unblemished slate held by Strasburg with the final defeat eliminating the Tigers from the State Tournament.

Last night, the Baltic Eagles won a thriller from the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers 84-75, while the Strasburg Tigers eased into the finals with the Reserves playing the entire 2nd half and finishing up with an 89-68 verdict.  Doors to Memorial Hall will open at 6:30 today.

The Strasburg Talented-laden Tigers (4-0) (22-2) coasted to a victory over the Millersburg Knights (2-18) , whom the Tigers had defeated 71-43 during the regular season.  Head Coach Ken Newlon's charges, despite a performance that was not up to Bengals' previous tournament showings, raced away to a 28-19 1st quarter lead and were on top 52-30 at the half time intermission.

Senior Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel tallied 18 points to lead the varsity in its 2-period stint, while little Senior Gene Hensel was the spark plug for the Cats as he threw in 8 action shots for 16 points in the 1st-half.  The Knights cooled off after a 19-point 1st quarter and the Spartans dropped off the pace with the Orange and Black taking advantage of the letdown and cruising away.

The Strasburg Reserves took over and played the entire 2nd half on even terms with the Trojans.  Junior Will Rieger was the top man for the Reserves and for the Bengals as he connected for 20 points.  Chuck Liggett and John Maxwell  took scoring honors for the game as they set the pace for Millersburg with 26 and 23 markers.  The Knights scoring duo turned in top notch games for the Spartans.

The Cats were not only off from the field and on defense, but made 25 and missed 23 free throw shots, while the Trojans had a slightly better time of it with 20 of 34.  Millersburg lost Larry Meeks and Brent Hall via personal fouls, while Strasburg lost the services of substitute Bill Hensel.

Strasburg whipped Millersburg during the regular season 71-43.
