The 1953 Mineral City Cheeleaders Team: Senior Ruth Shroyer - Junior Marie Gribi and Junior Janet Davidson.
DOVER - With Junior guard Ralph Vesco and Senior forward Don (Red) Tharp waxing hot, the Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (2-16) (12-46) was no match for the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (14-4) (42-38). Vesco tallied 21 points and did not play in the 4th quarter and parts of the 2nd and 3rd periods. Tharp played just about all the way and scored 22, of which, 12 of these coming in the 2nd frame.
The Broncos started out with a 20-7 lead and were way ahead 43-20 by halftime. The Tigers fought them on even terms in the 3rd stanza with the score 57-33 at the close and Vesco accounting for 7 of the Broncos' points. Both teams had their substitutes in at the close with few fans left to witness the proceedings. Senior center Lorin Shroyer led the Bengals with 13 points and Junior forward Gene Argento gobbled up another 12 markers.
During the regular season, Tuscarawas handed Mineral City a 76-62 defeat.
