52 - Another Upset,,,Tusky Tops Midvale 52-49 (2-12-52)
Last night's fireworks at Memorial Hall were enough to task the scorekeeping ability of any sportswriter. But, Ray Stull of The Daily Reporter had double trouble. His son, David like any boy was attending his 1st tournament game and naturally that called for the "works" including pop, candy and popcorn. Oh, Yes, he upset the bottle of pop, too and his Dad should have taken the hint because it was a full evening of upsets on the playing floor.

The object of the skirmish here, obviously, is the ball as Midvale's Ron Harmon (left) and Tusky's Dick Hill and Jim Henry battle for possession.

DOVER - The Tuscarawas Broncos, Dundee Bulldogs and Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates remained in the Championship fight of the 30th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament with 2 more tilts slated for tonight at Memorial Hall here, which will be broadcast on radio by WJER, starting at 7:30. The program is expected to last until 10:30.
The curtain raiser at 7:30 will pit the Stone Creek Golden Panthers against the Port Washington Purple Riders and the 2nd game will send the Pirates against the Baltic Eagles. With 1,800 high-strung fans jamming into the hall last night, hardwood pounding in the 1st round was just as rugged as expected.
And if you don't think that is perhaps an understantement, just ask the Midvale Blue Devils, Bolivar Cardinals...or even Referee Allen Viegel. The Blue Devils, which had its fires squelched by the Tusky in the final League game of the season, was kicked right out of the Championship race 52-49 in a good, old fashioned thriller-diller and it was those snorting Broncos who have swooped down out of apparent oblivion to be the "talk-of-the-town" as they took the rubber game between the schools.
Head Coach Warren Craigo's Cardinals probably wondered where the Pirates found a cache of vitamin pills as they fell before the Buccaneer onslaught 61-48. The Cardinals had defeated the Bucs twice during the regular season. And in the heat of the grueling contests, Referee Viegel, a former basketball star himself, was showing the strains of it all. The Coshocton Countian had to call time out in the heat of the 2nd frame in the Tuscarawas-Midvale struggle to unkink a charley-horse in his right leg. Head Coach Chuck Stocker of Midvale came to Viegel's aid with some "flik-em-up salve."
The other official, Max Kister of Shreve, was worn right down to the shoe top, but managed to chug home under his own power. Only the Strasburg Tigers failed to make the opening night a complete "giant killer" after they ran into a flock of bad passes and cool shooting in the 2nd period. The Tigers recovered; however, and mustered a valiant battle before bowing 52-48.
But all that came after the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (9-11) (38-37), who sweltered in the throes of 10 out of 11 setbacks at the beginning of the season, came up with the best floor work of the night and some fancy marksmanship to trip the Midvale Blue Devils (0-1) (18-3) (52-26), League Co-Champion with the Dundee Bulldogs. Leading most of the route, the Broncos uncorked a well-balanced attack and a good defense which saw the Blue Devils' ace Junior forward Dick Tolloti, held to only 6 points in the 1st half.
Jumping off to a 5-0 lead early in the opening quarter, Head Coach Lorenz' charges led 14-7 at the close of the period and 27-21 at intermissioin, but came up on the short end of a 39-37 count going into the final canto. With the lead changing hands 11 times and the score tied 3 in a hectic last period, the Broncos grabbed the lead 50-49 with 2 and a half minutes left. Sophomore guard Jim Henry then followed with a 2-pointer to end the scoring. The Tusky crew then clamped on a stall which the Blue Devils were unable to break.
Actually, Tuscarawas won the tilt at the free throw line, hitting 16 of 22 attempts, while Midvale cashed 9 of 13. The Diablos connected on 20 action shots with Tusky getting 18. Junior forward Don Tharp, Senior center Dick Ronald and Sophomore Harry Thompson carried the brunt of the Bronco attack by meshing 15, 10 and 10 points respectively. Tolloti and Junior forward Don Graham scored 18 and 12 for the Blue Devils.
