25 - Sugarcreek Bests Bethesda 29-17 (3-13-25)






CAMBRIDGE - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-1), Tuscarawas County's entry in the Eastern District of Ohio Class B High School Basketball Tournament at Cambridge, won its initial game of the tourney Friday afternoon by defeating Bethesda High School.  According to tournament officials Bethesda was rated among the best of them at the meet.  The Tuscarawas County team gained the applause of the tournament crowd by its brilliant performance, playing the game in top form despite the danger of staleness they encountered by the delay.  Because of their brilliant performance, it was generally conceded at the tourney that Sugarcreek would surely find its way into the finals on Saturday night.  The winner at Cambridge will represent the Eastern District of the state at the tourament at Columbus March 20 and 21.

The Forrest Miller-Dan Meyers-Bob Neff combination worked to perfection.  Miller being made the key to the point making offense.  Miller registered 8 field goals and a free throw.  Meyers, marked because of his stellar performance during the past season was held to 2 field goals.  Neff at the other forward came through with 4 field goals.  Oliver Watson and Marcus Miller played the Bethesda forwards to a stand-still, the down state team earning every one of  their markers.  Lewis starred for Bethesda, registering 4 times from the floor.  Kemp, a guard made 2 field goals and Smith, the other guard registered once from  the floor.  Bethesda's other field goal was made by Phillips, sub-center.  Brown, right forward, tallied 2 free throws for Bethesda which made their total of 19.

Carrollton High School, representing Carroll county at the meet, came through its initial game with colors flying by defeating Pleasant City, 24-20.  Carrollton is also said to be one of the 3 strongest teams at the tourney.  Mingo Junction looks like the other one of the three.
