47 - The Strasburg Tigers Wins The 25th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament For The 3rd Straight Time (2-21-47)

The Strasburg Tigers were a pretty happy gang of basketeers Friday night in their dressing room after they had defeated the Sugarcreek-Shanesvilles Pirates 48-45 to capture the county tournament.  They surrounded their Head Coach, Emmet Riley and gave him a big cheer for guiding them to victory.  The Tigers and Pirates automatically qualified for the Sectional Tournament by reaching the Championship finals.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers re-asserted their supremacy in the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament Friday night when they defeated the Sugarcreek Shanesville Pirates 48-45 to become the 1st quintet in the 25-year history of the county tournament to twice hold the Championship for 3 consecutive years.

Playing before 1,335 fans in Memorial Hall, 4th Head Coach Emmet Riley's titlists registered their 24th victory in 25 starts to boost their 2-year record to 52 triumphs against 2 defeats, thus boosting one of the State's outstanding records.

Both finalists will play in the Sectional Tournament here next week along with the Tuscarawas Broncos, which defeated the Bolivar Cardinals 58-53 last night to win the Consolation Division honors for the 3rd straight year.  Drawings for the Sectional will be held Monday night at 7:30PM in Dover High School.

Victory didn't come easy for the Strasburg Tigers (4-0) (24-1) (69-17) last night as the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (19-5) (44-28) battled right down to the last second, but the Tigers had Junior Clarence Yackey, 6-5 center and Junior forward Roland Malcuit and those 2 spelled the difference.  The towering Yackey topped the scorers with 16 points and his ability to control rebounds in the 2nd half was a big factor in the triumph.  But, it was Malcuit who kept the Tigers in the running at critical stages with his brilliant long shots.  Junior guard Tom Haswell, who has played good ball for the League Champions throughout the tourney, tallied 10 points.

Even in defeat, Sugarcreek-Shanesville had its own heroes in forwards Bill Weiss and Doren Immel, who collected 15 points each, while giving Yackey a terrific battle around the backboards.  But, Strasburg had the better passing attack as it set up close shots or worked the ball into Yackey for lay-ups.

It was a close duel until the last 4 minutes when Strasburg began to stall after gaining a 46-40 lead on 2 field goals by Yackey.  Substitute Sophomore forward Jim Weber hiked the advantage to 48-40 with a set toss and in the remaining time the Tigers turned down 5 free throws when fouled as the Pirates tried to break up the stalling game.  With 20 seconds to go the losers had tallied 5 points, but the clock stopped their futile rally.  First-Year Head Coach Bill Ott of the Pirates didn't start Immel, but he entered the contest midway in the 1st period and meshed 5 points as his team outscored Strasburg 7 to 2 to knot the count at 13-all as the quarter ended.

Weiss and Yackey traded action shots at the start of the 2nd period and then Weiss meshed one of his pet pivot tosses to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a lead which it held until the last 2 minutes of the half when a free throw by Yackey and 2 field goals by Marvin Jeffers pushed the Tigers in front 28-26 as the intermission arrived.

But, the Pirates came back from their halftime rest to outscore the Champions 11 to 8 to assume a 37-36 lead as the 3rd period ended.  A long shot by Malcuit put Strasburg in the lead at the start of the stretch stanza and Haswell added a follow-up and the Tigers were never headed; although, they lost Jeffers on personals at that point.  The Pirates did cut the margin to 47-40 on a free toss by forward Ed Hamsher and field goal by Weiss, but Yackey then accounted for the 2 important field goals which gave his team a 6-point edge and ultimate victory.

It was a well-played game, particularly in the 1st half, with Referees Nick Frascella and Vally Dirodis calling only 25 personals, 14 against the Pirates.  Strasburg missed only 2 of 6 free throws, while the Ottmen missed on 6 of 15.  During their only contest of the season, Sugarcreek-Shanesville took Strasburg to overtime in a 42-40 loss.
