DENNISON - Outscored only in the 3rd quarter, the Strasburg Tigers (9-0) (29-1) took another step toward the State Class B Championship throne on Friday night when they captured their 2nd consecutive District title by defeating a willing, but impotent Walnut Creek Cardinal quintet (19-3) 56-39 on the Dennison High School court before approximately 1,500 fans, of which 1,383 of whom were paid customers.  Added to the well-filled Strasburg trophy case was the Ohio High School Athletic Association's award.  It also presented the Bengals with individual gold medals and Walnut Creek with a runner-up trophy and individual silver medals.

In winning a berth in the Kent Regionals which get underway next Thursday, Strasburg assumed a 14-4 first period lead over the Cardinals and was never seriously endangered as it rolled on to margins of 30-15 at intermission and 39-28 at the 3rd quarter mark.  Junior Clarence Yackey, the elongated Tiger center, was too tall for the Cardinals to top and he paced his team's 29th decision by collecting 17 points on 7 field goals and 3 free throws.  Junior guard Tom Haswell was right on his heels with 15 points, while Senior guard Marvin Jeffers tallied 12 with Junior forwards Roland Malcuit and Dean Beitzel getting 4 each.

Walnut Creek, which was blazing hot against the Adena Warriors, was cooled off by a rather tight Strasburg defense which gave the Cardinals few clean shots at the hoop.  Forward Lowell Zook led the losers with 10 points with guard Bob Gerber getting 9 and guards Gene Miller and Rich Hostetler picking up 7 each.  Forward Doran Horrisberger, usually a high producer for the Red Birds, was held to but 4 points.  Referees A. Long and Ray Scherrer, who were jockeyed considerable by both camps, called 31 personals, 17 against Walnut Creek.  The Bengals made good on 8 of 17 free throws, while the Cardinals sank 9 of 21.

Malcuit's lay-up on the opening tip-off gave Head Coach Emmet Riley's hoopsters a 2-0 lead and they were in front the rest of the route.  After free throws by Tom Haswell and Yackey, Zook netted a hook toss and that was the closest the Red Birds came to catching up with the Tigers. A set effort by Tom Haswell, a "bunny" and tip-in by Yackey and overhead toss by Beizel made it 12-2 with Miller and Malcuit trading field goals before the quarter ended.

Jeffers tallied 3 action shots and Yackey and Tom Haswell 2 each in the end frame when Walnut Creek began to rally slightly; although, outscored 16 to 11.  Behind by 15 points when the 3rd stanza opened, the Cards scored 5 straight points to narrow Strasburg's edge to 10 and Coach Riley substituted Weber and Reiger for Malcuit and Beitzel.  The Tigers then began to hit again and with the count 37-22, Malcuit and Beitzel re-entered the game.

Starting the final period with an 11-point margin, Strasburg saw that cut to 8 before they again turned on the power as Yackey collected 8 of his points by controlling the rebounds.  With 4 minutes remaining, the Bengals were on top 46-35 and they outpointed the Cardinals 10 to 5 in the closing minutes.

The Tigers successfully solved Walnut Creek's zone defense; although, at times their passing was slipshod with the alert Red Birds frequently making interceptions.  But, Walnut Creek couldn't cope with the high passes to Yackey, who also played another good floor game as did Tom Haswell.  Despite the fact that they were outclassed, the Cardinals continued to display calm basketball and drew frequent applause with their tricky shots.
