47 - Strasburg Slams St. Mary's 65-24 (2-28-47)

DOVER - It will be the Strasburg Tigers vs Tuscarawas Broncos at 8PM and the Berlin Blue Jays and Walnut Creek Cardinals at 9PM when the finals of the Northeastern Ohio Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament is held tonight in Memorial Hall here and the customers probably will be hanging on the rafters for this wind-up of the local scholastic cage play.

Strasburg last night resumed where it left off Thursday in beating the Millersburg Knights 67-23 by eliminating the Dennison St. Mary's Blue Wave 65-34 to reach the finals.  The Walnut Creek Cardinals, making its 1st Sectional start after drawing a bye, knocked the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates out of the running in a 57-46 battle, while the Berlin Blue Jays defeated the Dennison Railroaders 44-39.

The Strasburg-Tuscaraswas encounter will pair the county tournament winner and defending titlist against the Consolation Division victor with the Tigers favored to repeat a 51-42 triumph recorded over the Broncos in the final game of the regular season.  The Cardinals gets a weak nod over Berlin, having defeated that club 42-40 to win the Holmes County Tournament.

The Strasburg Tigers (6-0) (26-1) hit the court in search of their 26th win of the season, but required one quarter to "feel out" the Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves (12-10) last night and then turned on the power to rout the Blue Waves as the star tigerman, Junior center Clarence Yackey, surpassed his Thursday night performance by 2 points in harvesting 22 points (9 field goals and 4 free throws) to pace the victory.  The Tigers leaped to a 13-8 1st quarter lead.  In the 2nd stanza, the Strasburg offense increased their scoring output to 16, while the defense held the Blue Waves to only 6 more points.  Strasburg...29-14.  The Tigers continued to increase their scoring output after intermission to 21 points as St. Mary's copped another 8 points in the 3rd quarter.  Strasburg...50-22.  In the 4th period, the Blue Waves could not gain any ground as the Tigers hit the hoops for 15, while St. Mary's had 12.

Junior guard Tom Haswell meshed 15 points for the Tigers, while their only Senior, guard Marvin Jeffers, gathered 10 markers.  Forward D. Trolio paced Dennison St. Mary's with 9 points.  Strasburg doubled the Blue Waves' output from the field by hitting 22 field goals and also caged 21 of 33 free throws as 25 personals were called on the losers.  The Blue Waves hit on 12 of 29 free tosses.
