47 - Baltic Pulls Away In The 4th...Downs Dundee 67-58 (2-13-47)

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Port Washington Purple Riders gained the semi-finals of the Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament on Thursday night by registering victories at Memorial Hall where a good crowd of 1,152 fans also saw the Baltic Eagles advance in the Consolation Division.

The Pirates turned back the Midvale Blue Devils 45-35 in a hard-fought contest, while the Purple Riders clipped the Mineral City Tigers 63-47 and the Baltic Eagles outlasted the Dundee Bulldogs 67-58.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville will battle the Tuscarawas Broncos on Tuesday night for the right to represent the upper bracket in the finals.  Port, on Tuesday at 7PM, will play the winner of the Strasburg-Gnadenhuteen Indians game Saturday at 9PM.  The Bolivar Cardinals and Stone Creek Golden Panthers will meet at 7PM Saturday night and Midvale and Mineral City will clash at 8PM in Consolation Division duels.

The Baltic Eagles (1-1) (8-11) (24-35) outlasted the Dundee Bulldogs (0-2) (5-9) (19-36) last night at Memorial Hall 67-58 in the 1st Consolation Division contest by putting distance between them in the 4th quarter.  The Eagles and Bulldogs never played against each other during the season.

Baltic took a 4-0 lead over Dundee and was never headed; although, the Bulldogs more than once threatened to overtake the Eagles, who led 21-17, 33-25 and 46-43.  With just 4 minutes remaining, the count was 56-51, but Head Coach George Graff's Eagles then pulled away to a comfortable margin.

A torrid shooting streak by Senior guard Dean Gerber in the very 1st quarter saw him pour in 6 field goals through the hoop.  He racked up 8 of the 17 points Baltic tallied before Dundee could sink a single action shot.  Four free throws by guard Paul Kate and one by forward Warren Snyder comprised the Dundee scoring during that period.  Gerber fouled out in the 3rd period, but not before he had accounted for 18 points.  Senior Marvin Dietz, Baltic's big center, also drew his 5th personal in the 3rd frame after collecting 12 points.    Junior forwards Myron Pepper contributed 12 to the win, while Junior Bob Stauffer added 11 and Senior guard Willis Gardner 10.

Kate compiled the biggest individual total to date in the tourney when he meshed 9 field goals and 10 free throws for 28 points.  Forward Bud Walters trailed him with 13.
