47 - Strasburg Mauls Millersburg 67-23 (2-27-47)










DOVER - In the 1st game of the Northeastern Ohio Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament, the Strasburg Tigers (5-0) (25-1) slammed the Millersburg Knights (1-19) 67-25 in last night's contest at Memorial Hall.  The Tigers, in rolling to their 25th conquest in 26 starts, gained a 16-4 lead in the 1st quarter.  With already a 12-point lead going into the 2nd period of play, the Strasburg offense dropped in another 22 points, while their defense limited the Knights to another 4 points as the scoreboard read 38-8 and a 30-point lead at intermission.  Junior forward Dean Beitzel meshed 9 points and Junior center Clarence Yackey had 7 in the 1st half.  The Tiger offense slowed up a bit during the 3rd stanza gathering only 14 points, but the defense continued give up only 4 points per quarter in the 1st 3 periods locking up the game...Strasburg 52-12.

Head Coach Emmet Riley's cagers reaped dividends on 17 of 27 free throws as a total of 44 personal fouls were called by Referees Mariner McCoy and Ed Sherman with 22 going against each club.  The Knights hit on 9 of 27 free throws.

Strasburg's regulars played only 3 quarters inlthe rout of Millersburg.  Every one of the 10 Tigers scored at least 3 points with Yackey, All-County Tournament center, setting the pace with 20 points on 7 field goals and 6 charity tosses.  Beitzel was next with 11, while Junior guard Tom Haswell and Freshman forward John Haswell tallied 7 points apiece with Harold Smith scoring a like number to head Millersburg.
