Last Saturday night, Bill Hummel, star forward for the Berlin Blue Jays' basketball team, scored 15 points, but his efforts were wasted as his team lost to Walnut Creek's Cardinals 48-36 in the Sectional finals. Tonight Hummel returns to Memorial Hall, but it will be lefts and rights he will be throwing instead of a lead of baskets.  The Berlin athlete will appear in the Golden Gloves Tournament as an opponent of Dover's Buddy Truman in the lightweight tussle.  And, if Hummel is as good with the gloves as he is with a basketball "President" is in for a rough evening.

ZZZZZ

Total attendance at this year's county Class B Tournament at Memorial Hall was 6,893, just 145 under the record of 7,013 set in 1946, but receipts were $26.78 more.  The total take according to Supt. W.E. Laws, who was the tourney manager, was $3,574.83, including program advertising, whereas the 1946 total was $3,508.05.  The 11 schools participating in the evenings received $195 each this year against $215 last year. But, expenditures were higher for the recent meet, particularly for officiating and policing.  Some of the heavier expenses were:

Federal Tax - $757.16
State Tax - $60.48
Hall Rental - $125.00
Referees - $300
Police and Fireman - $68.50
Printing - $70.94
Manager $70.00

Twice before the competing schools received $195.00 each...in 1944 and 1945...whereas in 1933, the 1st year in Supt. Law's records, they received only $50.00 each.  The attendance then was 2,722 and receipts $842.66.  Incidentally, a breakdown of this year's attendance shows 4,032 adults paid to see the meet, while the student turnout was 2,866.  Of course, considerably more saw the tournament considering the passes which were issued.  The best one-night attendance was the 1,454 who turned out for the 4th session.  The next night only 477 were on hand, the only time the attendance was below 1,000.

ZZZZ

Leading scorer of the Yorkville Duetillites which will oppose the Strasburg Tigers Thursday night in the Eastern District Tournament at Dennison is Nino Lampasone, returning forward from last year, who has meshed 661 points in 30 games for an average slightly above 22 percent.  When the Duetillites, who have lost 3 games bowed to Wheeling Central Catholic, West Virginia's parochial Champions, they missed on 17 free throws and when they lost to Weirton, West Virginia, they failed to hit on 24.

The Adena Warriors, the Walnut Creek Cardinals' opponent, is headed by Ed Staniewicz, who has averaged 25 points in 25 contests.  His highest output in a single game was 52, best sole performance of those boys in the District event.  The timber topper of the Cardinals is Doran Horrisberger.  Adena's 4 losses were to Yorkville, giving the Ductillites some measure of revenge for last season when they beat Adena twice, but then lost to the Warriors in the Sectional Tournament.  Of course, Yorksville would like nothing better than to meet and defeat Adena in the District meet.  But, Strasburg and Walnut Creek are going to have something to say about that.

The Strasburg Tigers to date have amassed 1,397 points in 28 games for an average of 49.9.  They permited their foes 813 points, or 29 per contest.  The record includes 7 tournament games in which Junior Clarence Yackey, the Bengals' fine 6-5 center, meshed 151 points or 21.4 per contest.  Junior guard Tom Haswell is running 2nd to Yackey with 72 markers.  Yackey's scoring ability makes him a marked player every time he steps onto the floor, but teams which regard him only as a point-making threat are under estimating his value.  In his tourney appearances to date, Yackey has been the Tigers' mainstay in rebound play and has also proved a good team player, passing the ball well and also performing admirably defensively.
