47 - It's Gnaden On A Miss-Fire By Midvale 48-46 (2-18-47)

Gnadenhutten Indians Sophomore Forward Gene Montague gained game honors pushing the hoops for 17 points (7 field goals and 3 free throws) in a 48-46 close call against the Midvale Blue Devils last night at Memorial Hall.  Gene has dropped in a total of 41 points in the tournament for an average of 13.6 markers per game.

DOVER - The stage had been set today for the Championship playoff of the 25th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament Friday night at 8:30PM, Tuesday night's action running true to form as the Strasburg Tigers defending titlists laced the Port Washington Purple Riders 57-32 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates squeezed past the Tuscasrawas Broncos in a 39-37 thriller.

The Bolivar Cardinals and Gnadenhutten Indians advanced to the Consolation Division semi-finals on Thursday night, the former nipping the Baltic Eagles 51-46 and Gnaden edging the Midvale Blue Devils 48-46 in 2 other thrill-packed encounters.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (2-1) (12-11) (39-30) beat the Midvale Blue Devils (1-2) (11-13) (42-23) 48-46 in a very close Consolation Division contest at Memorial Hall on Thursday night.  The Indians and Blue Devils met twice during the season with Gnaden winning both games...40-29 in the 1st game of the season for both teams, and 38-33.  With hundreds of fans being unable to gain admittance to Memorial Hall at all, the paid attendance was 1,459 and the customers really got their money's worth in all but the Strasburg-Port game.

Midvale's sharp-passing Blue Devils almost caught up with Gnaden's Indians in the final seconds, but time ran out as Sophomore forward Jack Ford missed fired on a fielder which would have tied the count.  Three times in the tense 2nd half the score was even and the lead changed 5 times before a free throw by Senior guard Bob Hearing gave Gnadenhutten a 41-40 edge early in the final stanza.  Sophomore forward Gene Montague then netted 6 straight points for a 47-40 margin with less than 4 minutes left.

Midvale's Junior guard Dan Carlisle meshed a set toss and after Gnaden's Sophomore forward Jim Lindon caged a free throw, Ford hit on a one-hander and substitute guard Sophomore Ron Pissocra garnered another 2-pointer to trim the Indians' lead to 2 points, but Gnadenhutten's luck held.  Montague sparked the winners with 17 points, while Lindon contributed 14.  Ford paced Midvale with 16 points with Carlisle gathering 11 markers completing the highlights of the scoring.
