42 - Tuscarawas Stings Bolivar 42-29 (2-21-42)

DOVER - With only 4 teams remaining in regular tournament play and 4 others still fighting for the Consolation title, the Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament will resume play on Thursday night with the Champion Gnadenhutten Indians, Dundee Bulldogs, Strasburg Tigers and the Tuscarawas Broncos battling it out for the Championship.

Only one of the favorites was missing from the regular tourney list after the first 10 games.  The Bolivar Cardinals, only team to defeat Gnaden this year, fell before Tuscarawas 42-29 in Saturday night's featured game.  The Broncos, who finished the League Season in a tie with the Red Birds, won the game on foul shots after piling up a big 1st half advantage.

The other 2 games were in the Consolation Division.  The Stone Creek Golden Panthers, playing without their star, forward Bill Ridenour, eliminated the Midvale Blue Devils, a semi-finalist in last year's State Tournament, 32-29 in a rip-roaring overtime game and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates eliminated the Port Washington Purple Riders 41-19.  The Mineral City Tigers were eliminated on Friday night by the Baltic Eagles 28-15.

A total of 792 persons paid to see Saturday night's session as compared with 765 for last year's session, Tournament Manager Harold Everett of Tuscarawas reported.

The Bolivar Cardinals (1-1) (28-23)-Tuscarawas Broncos (2-0) (17-23) game, was scheduled to be one of the best of the tourney, failed completely and the Broncos, with Senior forward Charles Myers scoring 7 field goals and 8 free throws for 22 points, won handily on a 1st half splurge of 26 points.  The Broncos, with Myers bolting through the Bolivar defense for short shots and rifling in long ones from the side, were ahead 14-7 at the 1st period and then put on a sweeping rally the final 4 minutes of the 2nd to grab a 26-12 advantage at halftime.

Bolivar, bogged down by personal fouls and way off in the shooting department, had its chance in the 2nd half, but couldn't click.  Early in the 3rd period the Red Birds got within 9 points at 30-21.  Aided by 2 technical fouls, Tusky went way in front 36-23 as the period ended, putting the game on ice.  Both teams scored even from the field with 12 field goals apiece, but Tuscarawas sank 16 of 25 free throws, while Bolivar was making only 3 of its allotted 12 charity tosses.

Referees Ed Adams of Akron and John Gabor of Alliance assessed 18 personals upon Bolivar, infliction of the penalties causing one technical because of crowd conduct and another for player conduct.  The Cardinals lost Gil Augsberger, Calvin Jones and Bill Zutavern.  The Broncos scored 10 of their field goals in the 1st half, while Bolivar got only 5.  The Red Birds scored 8 in the 2nd half and missed many more, while the Broncos were picking up 3.
