42 - Bolivar Falls To New Concord 42-31 (3-13-42)

Head Coach John Major and his Bolivar High School Cardinals, above, enter the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament at Dennison facing the highly-touted, undefeated New Concord Small Muskies nickenamed the "Whiz Kids," who ran-down the Cardinals 42-31.  Members of the Red Bird team are FRONT:  Bill Zutavern - Calvin Jones - Warren Klink - Russ Ross and Joe Huffman.  MIDDLE:  Head Coach John Major - Sam Gordon - Paul Lab - Homer Class - Ralph Peden and Manager Ray Webber.  BACK:  Manager Junior Lundenberger - Jim Augsburger - Fred Charton - Keene Lebold and Tom Harris.  Absent when the picture was taken was Gil Augsburger.

DENNISON - Head Coach Major's Bolivar Cardinals (6-2) (14-7) put up one of the pluckiest scraps of the District Tournament, but lost ground almost continuously against the veteran New Concord Small Muskies which boasts not only experience, but a lot of height and 2 boys who received honorable mention on the Associated Press All-Ohio Team.  Battling for every point and every rebound at either end of the court, the Cardinals cut the "Whiz Kids" from their season average of 60 points a game to the 42 they needed to win.  And for a time, particulary in the 2 middle stanzas, it appeared that the Red Birds might trade the "Whiz" in on "Fizz."

There the Majormen tallied even at 9 points in the 2nd quarter and gave up only 2 in the 3rd with the Muskies gaining a 12-10 edge.  New Concord raced to a 9-4 advantage in the opening of the 1st period, but Bolivar hit back and wound up only 4 points off the pace, 10-4.  After the even scoring in the 2nd quarter, New Concord held a 19-15 lead and continued out front the remainder of the way, leading 31-25 at the 3rd quarter mark.

Junior Warren Klink, Bolivar forward who as a Sophomore rated an All-State berth, copped scoring honors for the Cardinals with 13 points, but was edged for game honors by New Concord's Bob Slater who had 14.  Klink sparked the Cardinal attack in almost every department and scored 5 field goals and 3 free throws, while Slater of the Little Muskies had 6 baskets and 2 foul tosses.  Forward Calvin Jones tallied 7 counts for Bolivar and center Russ Ross and guard Joe Huffman each picked up 5.

The Cardinals lost Jones and Ross in the 4th period on personal fouls, while New Concord lost Captain Wallace and Stockum.
