42 - Gnaden Drops Sherrodsville 56-41 (3-5-42)

Tuscarawas County's Gnadenhutten Indians basketball star Senior center John Metzger ran-down game honors by scoring 16 points (7 field goals and 2 free throws) while leading the Indians to a 56-41 victory over the Sherrodsville Wildcats.

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (4-0) (24-1) started their game with the Sherrodsville Wildcats (16-5) with precision, clicking off to an 18-9 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and went on to take a 31-17 lead at intermission, but they missed many sucker shots.  Head Coach A.B. Hendricks' Sherrodsville cagers wouldn't quit in the 3rd period...where Gnaden led 45-27...and early in the 4th stanza cut the lead to 11 points after Senior center John Metzger left the game, but the Indians were good enough to coast through.

Metzger scored all of his 16 points, high honors for the game, in the 1st three quarters, while Senior forward Don Miller, who also went out on fouls in the 4th and Junior guard Ken Kohl each got 10.  Junior guard Bill Lockett dropped in 9, Senior forward Bill Schreiner had 6 and Junior forward Ralph Long, who has recovered from an attack of the mumps, returned to the squad and chalked up 5 more points.  Guard Bill Herron, a left-hander, led Sherrodsville with 11 points, while center Newell got 8 markers.  Forward Sharp who scored 6 points went out on personals.

Head Coach Ralph W. "Blondie" Gartrell's Indians were assessed 17 personal fouls, losing both Metzger and Miller and nearly losing Lockett and Long.  The Wildcats lost Sharp in the final stanza.  Gnadenhutten was way off on its free throw shooting, dumping in only 6 of 17, while Sherrodsville made 6 of 15 attempts.
