DOVER - The surprise of the tournament was pulled out of the bag last night by Sugarcreek-Shanesville, twice defeated by Strasburg in regular season play, when they put up such a stiff battle only to lose out in the last minute.  The Pirates were to lead the Tigers for the first 3 quarters.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-2) (34-23) played the Strasburg Tigers (2-1) (53-13) to a standstill in the 1st period, leading once 8-4 before taking a 13-12 lead at the quarter's end.  And with Senior guard Bob Immel potting 3 straight long shots, the Pirates took a 23-19 lead at the half.  They continued to lead in the 3rd period as Strasburg cut the margin to 30-28 as the quarter closed.  Senior guard Ken Houtz scored a fielder for Strasburg as the final period opened and forward Ray Blick scored a free throw to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a 31-30 edge.

Houtz and Junior center Carl Yackey each scored buckets for the Tigers to take a 34-31 lead, but Blick and center Junior Trachsel hit with fielders and the Pirates regained the lead 35-34.  Again Strasburg  went in front, Yackey scoring a free throw and Senior guard Dick Welsch a field goal, but Blick potted another fielder to knot the count at 37-all.  Then Sophomore forward Glen Stille sank a short shot to give Strasburg a 39-37 lead with one minute to to.  Guard Bill Mast missed a free throw for Sugarcreek-Shanesville and then Immel got 2 shots when fouled by Stille.  He dropped the 1st one, making the score 39-38, but missed the 2nd and Strasburg successfully stood-off the last-minute threat.

The Pirates, during the hectic last few minutes, had several scoring opportunities, but the ball refused to drop through the hoop.  The summary shows the Tigers winning by sinking 9 of 16 free throws, while Sugarcreek-Shanesville made only 6 of 15.  The Pirates scored 16 field goals to 15 for Strasburg.  The winners were assessed 10 personals and the losers 14.  Trachsel going out in the final quarter for the Pirates.

Yackey was high scorer for Strasburg with 12 points, but Houtz, who scored 11 of the Tigers' 20 points in the final half was the Tiger star.  Welsch scored 10.  Immel and Blick shared game honors for Sugarcreek-Shanesville, each getting 13 points each, while Trachsel was close behind with 9.
