42 - Dundee In 2nd Half Win Over Sugarcreek-Shanesville 34-26 (2-19-42)

DOVER - A rather small crowd of paid customers were on hand last night for the 20th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament which got under way at Memorial Hall last night, as 8 county teams in the circuit went-at-it, while Dundee, Bolivar, Stone Creek and Tuscarawas took the 1st round games.  The games showed no upsets; although, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates contest was lost to the Dundee Bulldogs 34-26.  Other games had Bolivar run over Baltic 40-13, Stone Creek thumped Mineral City 51-14 and Tusky dropped Port Washington 51-28.

A packed house is expected tonight and Gnaden's mighty Indians, one of the feature teams in this section of the State this year, are favored to cop the nod over the Midvale Blue Devils, winner of the District Title for the last 2 years.  Gnaden has won 10 straight League games and won 20 out of 21 season games...the best record assembled by a Class B club in the past few years.  The Indians topped Midvale 35-19 and 35-21 in regular season games.  The Strasburg Tigers vs Stone Creek Golden Panthers tussle will be a dog-fight with the Tigers attempting to assume the role of dark horse for the tournament.  Strasburg upset Stone Creek 30-29 in the last meeting of the 2 teams.

Doors open at 6PM and Tournament manager Harold Everett of Tuscarawas is expecting the 1st capacity crowd of the tourney.  Last nights paid attendance reached 650 with 315 adults and 335 students, but did not compare with the 1,382 first night figure of last year.  Other 400 passes to players, coaches and band members brought last night's estimated attendance to 1,009.

The Dundee Bulldogs (1-0) (16-25) took its victory over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) (32-22) by outscoring the Pirates 21 to 10 in the final half of the game with the flashy forward Milton Fruchey scoring 13 points to lead the Bulldog attack and helping himself to game honors.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville was ahead 7-5 at the end of the 1st quarter and 16-13 at halftime, but faded in the 3rd stanza and the Bulldogs copped a 23-19 lead going into the final quarter and was never headed.

Guard Junior "Buck" Machan followed Fruchey with 11 points for Dundee, while center Junior Trachsel and Senior guard Bob Immel each collected 8 for the Pirates.  The win puts the Bulldogs in the semi-finals where they meet the winner of the Gnaden-Midvale game next Thursday.

NOTE:  The Mineral City Tigers, which has won only one basketball game this year, put on the most elaborate display of cheerleading at Memorial Hall last night.  Nine girls composed the corps and at halftime of the Mineral City game they put on a drill, went through regular band formations and led cheers.  One of the formations was a "V" for victory.  The Tigers defeated their Alumni early in the season for their only triumph.
