42 - Bolivar Cardinals Wins 9th Annual Consolation Division Tournament Championship (2-28-42)

Bolivar Cardinals Junior Forward Warren Klink again won game honors while leading his team to a 32-30 victory over the Strasburg Tigers to win the 9th Annual Consolation Tournament Championship.  He personally score 15 points (6 field goals and 3 free throws).  His total during this tournament totaled 73 points, an average of 14.6 points per game.

DOVER - Bolivar won its opening game in the tournament 40-13 over the Baltic Eagles, but lost to the Tuscarawas Broncos 42-29 and then went into the Consolation Division defeating the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 51-33 and the Dundee Bulldogs 31-27.  Strasburg in it's 1st game beat the Stone Creek Panthers 27-20, then lost to Tusky 41-27 and then edged the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 39-38.

The Strasburg Tigers (2-2) (53-14) whose bid for the Consolation Title was a strong one, the Burgers leading until the 3rd quarter when for some reason they slumped and gave the Bolivar Cardinals (4-1) (31-23) an edge which eventually won the game.  Strasburg led 6-5 at the 1st quarter of play and once by 12-5 in the 2nd period before Bolivar cut the margin to 13-12 at halftime.  Then the Tigers started up again and had piled on an 18-14 lead in the 3rd stanza before they slumped once again.

Bolivar took a 24-18 lead and went on to increase it to 29-21 as the 3rd period ended.  Then trouble started for the Cardinals as Strasburg made its final rally, with only 5 minutes remaining.  The Red Birds' lead was cut to 30-25 and Senior forward Gene Gordon made it 30-27 with a field goal.

Strasburg had an out of bounds under Bolivar's basket and the ball was handed into Senior guard Ken Houtz who caught Bolivar napping and slipped in a sucker shot.  Gordon followed with a free throw and the count was tied at 30-all.  Bolivar scored next on a foul toss dropped in by guard Joe Huffman and Junior forward Warren Klink who potted another charity toss to make the count 32-30.  Bolivar turned down a free throw, taking the ball out of bounds and Strasburg did likewise as time went by.

Then with only 5 seconds remaining Bolivar refused another free throw toss, taking the ball out of bounds.  Strasburg stole it and Junior guard Tom Miller dribbled in for a sucker shot which would have tied the score, but the ball rolled along one edge of the hoop and dropped off.  Bolivar was held without a field goal the entire final period of the game, scoring only 3 free throws, while the Tigers scored 9 points on 3 field goals and 3 free throws.

Klink led the Bolivar attack with 15 points, while Huffman and Class were next with 5 points each.  The Red Birds lost center Russ Ross in the 3rd quarter and forward Calvin Jones and guard Bill Zutavern in the final stanza.  Strasburg was led by Houtz and Gordon who each potted 9 points.  Junior center Carl Yackey and Senior center Ed Weber were lost on personals.

Closeness of the game is emphasized in the box score.  Bolivar scoring 11 field goals to 10 for Strasburg and each team scoring 10 free throws.  The Cardinals were assessed 18 personals, missed 10 free throws and turned down 2 free throws, while the Tigers were assessed 17 fouls, missed 10 free throws and turned down one toss.
