35 - Window Climbers Add Spice To Tournament

DOVER - Keeping its promise to put on a real show and attract plenty of customers, the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball tournament packed'em in to the rafters at Legion Hall last night and some 5 or 6 hundred were turned away.  But, the determination of some to see the games led to great lengths.  In one case it resulted in additional entertainment being booked for the program tonight when the final games will be played.  The additional entertainment will be a skating exhibition by Johnny Ubel, Dover's State Champion and his partner, Miss Virginia Schwartz of Navarre.  The two will put on their exhibition at 7:25PM.

Ubel's determination to see the game last night caused him to go clear down to Broad Street and get a ladder with which he climbed in a window.  So far so good, but 10 other fans used the same means of ingress and without the formality of paying.  League officials and ""Hugh" Diehl of Legion Hall cracked down on Ubel, not desiring to pay for the 10 uninvited customers, agreed to put on the skating exhibition which more than pleased tournament officials.

Some 1, 545 fans were jammed into the Hall for the 4 games.  There were 1,285 customers who clicked the turnstiles to the tune of $395.95 for admission and the more than 260 who carry passes.  Those passes were not handed out right and left...each of the 12 teams participating in the meeting received 16 for players, coaches, managers, etc.

Oh, yes.  One of the window climbers was Dr. Vincent C. Nipple, loyal follower of the Midvale Blue Devils.  Doc didn't object to buying a ticket, but he certainly objected to being left out.  He went further than merely buying his own ticket, he paid for several others who had taken to the windows with enthusiasm, but no cash.

Members of the Strasburg Tigers which lost to Tuscarawas and in so doing fell from the pinnacle of the Class "B company in the county, probably will remember that husky team of Broncos.  The Broncos several weeks ago gained a 1-point (17-16) decision over Strasburg to break the Tigers long League winning streak that started 4 years ago.
