35 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Forces Bolivar To The Limit 43-38 (3-1-35)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (3-0) (15-11) had to go through the full 4 periods of their game with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (19-11) at break-neck speed before they could eke out a 5-point 43-38 decision to qualify for the finals tonight.  The Pirates set that cruel pace at the opening whistle and then went about the business of keeping it up until the final gun.  The force of the Pirate attack almost swept the Cardinals off their feet, but they rallied to command a 13-10 lead as the 1st quarter ended.  Returning in the 2nd quarter with the same characteristic burst of speed, Sugarcreek-Shanesville fought their way to a 20-19 lead, by the end of the half.  They slowed in the 3rd period, which ended 35-26 out rallied in the opening of the 4th to push back into the game to get within 2 points of their rivals with a 37-35 score.  There; however, Bolivar immediately caged 3 points to lead by 5 and got out of the danger zone.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville had the same 5 men in at the end of the game that started it, despite the fact that Senior Harold Arnold, pace-making center, had 3 personal fouls on him before the end of the 1st half.  Junior Paul Class, lanky 6-3 Bolivar center, found himself embarrassed with 2 personals in the 1st period and was unable to hit his high-scoring stride until the 2nd half.  There his pivot-shots began dropping off the bankboard at the right angle and when the gun cracked, the big star had registered 14 points (6 field goals and 2 free throws) to share scoring honors with Sophomore guard Cliff Moomaw of the Pirates.  Forward Ward Kreis of the Cardinals tallied 12 points (6 field goals), marking 8 of them in the 1st half, which kept his team in the running.
