35 - Shape's Sports Shavings

DOVER - Hugh Diehl Master of Ceremonies at Legion Hall, is putting the "accordion pull" on the bleachers around the walls of the building this week to stretch them out where they might be sufficient to take care of the crowds expected to turn out for the semi-finals and finals of the county Class B Tournament.  The customers weren't so anxious to see the contests run off last Friday and Saturday when the good teams were pitted against the weak ones, but there'll be no getting into the Hall at game time this week.

None of the 4 leading teams which were accorded positions in the brackets that made draws unnecessary looked so hot last weekend.  In the Strasburg Tigers-Gnadenhutten Indians game there was nothing to compare with the fine basketball, well-played, that was the big feature of that memorable game...in which the Tigers lost to the Tuscarawas Broncos a few weeks ago during League play.  Tusky, in its tilt with the Mineral City Tigers also lacked class and in the end relied mostly on its ruggedness for the final decision.  The Bolivar Cardinals had trouble, so did the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.

The Pirates, by the way, have shown remarkable progress after a very mediocre start in the season, but they found the Baltic Eagles very stubborn...in fact all the tourney teams playing the Eagles found them very stubborn.  It's hard to watch them play and then realize that they won only one League game all season.

We're not picking anyone to step out and knock down the prize.  If you were a witess at the League games in which Tuscarawas beat Strasburg and then lost to Bolivar, you too, will probably reserve judgement; although, you might compliment Strasburg for a smart ball club, Tusky for a rugged one that refuses to give up and Bolivar for a ditto.
