46 - Tusky Overwhelms Walnut Creek 49-30 (3-1-46)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers and the Berlin Blue Jays, the Tuscarawas Broncos and the Midvale Blue Devils, will battle it out at Memorial Hall tonight in the qualifying round of the Northeastern Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament for the right to compete in the District Tournament finals at Zanesville next week.

Berlin qualifing for the finals by upsetting the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers 42-23 last night in the tourney's biggest surprise so far, while Tusky's Broncos ran roughshod over Walnut Creek's Holmes County Champions 49-30 and Midvale sent Magnolia home 51-29.  Tournament Manager B.R. Griffith said that 1,237 paid customers watched the 3-game session last night and expected a full house tonight for the final games.

Strasburg winner of 24 straight games and Tuscarawas County League and Tournament Champions, will put that record on the block when the Tigers take on a classy little Berlin club, runner-up in the Holmes County Tournament and with a season record of 17-5.  The Tigers have appeared in the tourney once, dropping Dennison 44-26 on Thursday night.

Tuscarawas, which defeated Carrollton 44-26 Thursday night, is favored over Midvale, who ran over Walnut Creek 51-29 in their game, on the basis of season records, but season records don't count this week and Midvale has been coming on for the past few weeks.

Upset of St. Joseph by Berlin's fast Blue Jays and one Bill Hummell, expert ballhandler, floorman and shooter, was the feature of last night's show.

The Walnut Creek Cardinals (11-5), winners of the Holmes County Tournament, never had a chance with the big Tuscarawas Broncos (6-1) (22-3); although, the Creekers fought hard, but couldn't hit the baslet on a regular basis.

After hitting the court in the 1st quarter, the Broncos led by running circles around the Cardinals, 17-5.  Thins got considerly better in the 2nd period outscoring Tuscarawas 7 to 6 with scoreboard reading 23-12 at halftime.  The Broncos picked up where they left off in the 1st quarter, by dropping in 14 points in the 3rd stanza, while the Cardinals tried to keep up with 9 more points...Tusky 37-21.  The final quarter looked like the 3rd when Tuscarawas outscored Walnut Creek 12 to 9 wrapping up the contest.

The Broncos were assessed 25 personal fouls, while the Cardinals were hit with 13 in a rough game.  Tusky missed 10 free throws,while the Creekers, swished 12 of their free tosses and missed 16 others.

Senior forward John Vesco was Tuscarawas' high scorer with 17 points and added game honors, while his teammate Senior forward Rich Donahue grabbed 10 markers.  Forward Jim Miller turned in an outstanding game for Walnut Creek to collect 15 hard earned points.  Delbert Blatter of Coshocton and John Gee of Shadyside refereed all games.

46 - Midvale Slams Magnolia 51-29 (3-1-46)

DOVER - Head Coach Pete Wolf's Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (14-7), in their initial tournament appearance, polished off the Magnolia Panthers (13-10), Carroll County Champions, easily raced to a 16-3 lead in the 1st quarter and then in the 2nd period continued the unrelenting attack with a 30-9 advantage at halftime.  The offense let up somewhat in the 3rd stanza dropping in only 10 points, while the Panthers matched their point total of 10 markers for a commanding 40-19 lead going into the last quarter of play.  Both teams emptied the bench with the reserves of Midvale getting another 11 points, while the Magnolia Reserves matched their 3rd quarter output of 10 markers closing out the game.

Senior forward Dave Stevenson led the Blue Devils' attack with 15 points as he won game honors, while Seniors center Max Schaar and guard Karl Baumholtz each scored 11 markers.  Bob Trushel, Panther guard, was the only player to score regularly, hitting 9 points.

46 - Tusky Rocks Carrollton 44-26 (2-28-46)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers, Tuscarawas Broncos and the Berlin Blue Jays ousted the Dennison Railroaders, Carrollton Warriors and the Millersburg Knights from the Class B Northeastern Sectional Basketball Tournament last night when the annual event got under way at Memorial Hall with 1,057 paid admissions looking on and with a new schedule of 3 games set for tonight.  Strasburg's undefeated Tigers won their 24th straight game of the year with a great shooting exhibition as they swept over the Railroaders 44-26.  The Broncos dropped the Warriors out by the same score and the Blue Jays came through in the final seconds to take a thriller from the Knights 25-24.

Possibility of an all-Tuscarawas County qualifying round in the 2 Saturday night games with the winners going to Zanesville the following week for the Eastern District finals looked good today.  Both the Midvale Blue Devils and Tuscarawas Broncos are favored to win tonight and if so they will meet in the other qualifying game.

The Carrollton Warriors (6-11) gave the Tuscarawas Broncos (5-1) (21-3) some trouble by gettinghot in the 1st quarter to lead at one stage 9-3, but the Broncos started hitting their stride and after being behind 11-9 at the end of the quarter went on to take a 24-17 lead at intermission and a 30-21 advantage in the 3rd stanza before pouring it on in the final period.

Senior forward Rich Donahue of Tuscarawas was the Broncos' main threat all evening, dropping in 7 field goals for 14 points, while Senior center Fred Walton, high scoring ace, was held to 12 and Senior forward John Vesco followed up with 8 points.  Boyld Ray and W. Williamson led the Carrollton club with 13 and 10 points, respectively.  John Gee of Shadyside and Delbert Blatter of Coshocton officiated.

46 - Strasburg Derails Dennison 44-26 (2-28-46)

The Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward John Garver led his team to a 44-26 victory over the Dennison Railroaders by picking up game honors scoring 15 points.  Garver has a total of 30 markers in tournament play for a 6.0 points per game average.

DOVER - By winning their game last night 3rd-year Head Coach Emmet Riley's Strasburg cagers made their way into the qualifying round and were established with Tuscarawas as favorites to go to the Ohio Eastern District meet.  Tusky has been beaten only 3 times...all by Strasburg.  To put it mildly, the Strasburg Tigers (5-0) (24-0) were "hot" last night.  So hot that whatever chance the Dennison Railroaders (7-12) had to win the game went by the boards in the 1st half when Strasburg piled up a 26-6 margin by sinking almost half their shots.  The Bengals sank 19 of 46 shots for 41 percent.

Led by Senior forward and Captain John Garver, the Tigers dropped in 5 of 13 tries in the 1st quarter to lead 12-2 and then really warmed up in the 2nd period to hit an even 50 percent, 7 out of 14.  The Railroaders couldn't compete and scored only one field goal in the 1st quarter and another in the 2nd period.  With a little shoving between the rival cheerleaders taking the crowd's fancy, Strasburg cooled off in the 3rd stanza to make only 2 of 10 tries and Dennison began to find it's eye, trailing 31-11 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  The Tigers were on again in the final, hitting 5 of 9 shots, but the Riders hit its stride to outscore them 15-11.

Garver, whose 6 field goals in the 1st half included several real long ones over the Railroader defense, led the Tigers with 15 points, while Senior guard Joe Deibel hit 10, Sophomore forward Tom Haswell 9 and Senior center Fred Aul 8.  Sophomore center Yackey went scoreless, but was out most of the 3rd quarter and finally came back in the 4th only to leave the game on 5 personals.  Guard Okie Hunter led the Dennison attack with 8 points and guard Jim Richard, who scored 6, turned in a nice game for the Railroaders.  The loss was the 2nd time at the hands of Strasburg.

46 - Northeastern Sectional Tournament

DOVER - With 2 of the 5 county entries seeded, drawings for the Class B Northeastern Sectional Tournament this week at Memorial Hall were held last night at Dover High School.  In charge of the Tournament was Manager B.R. Griffith.  The Strasburg Tigers and Dover St. Joseph Ramblers, 2 of the 4 seeded teams, landed in the same bracket with the Dennison Railroaders, Millersburg Knights and the Berlin Jay Birds, while the Tuscarawas Broncos and Midvale Blue Devils landed in the lower bracket with the Carrollton Warriors, Walnut Creek Cardinals and the Magnolia Panthers.  The drawings put Strasburg's undefeated Tigers, winners of the County League and Tournament, in the favored position in the top bracket and Tuscarawas in the favored spot in the lower bracket.  One team from each bracket will go to the District at Zanesville next week.

Millersburg, opens the tourney Thursday at 7PM playing Berlin, Holmes County runner-up.  Head Coach Eddie Young's Dover St. Joseph cagers will take on the winner Friday.  Strasburg, which won 19 season games and 4 tournament contests, takes on the Dennison Railroaders on Thursday night and the winner of that tussle will meet the winner of the Millersburg-Berlin-St. Joseph contests Saturday in the qualifying round.

The bottom bracket puts Tusky's Broncos against Carrollton Thursday with Walnut Creek, the Holmes County champion, waiting to take on the winner Friday.  Midvale, county runner-up, takes on Magnolia, Carrollton County Champion, Friday and the winner meets the winner of the Tusky-Carrollton-Walnut Creek games Saturday for the qualifying game.

The seeding of the 3 county Champions, Strasburg, Walnut Creek and Magnolia and a draw between Carrollton, Millersburg, Dennison and St. Joseph for the 4th seeded spot was proposed by Manager Griffin at the beginningof the drawings, but failed to carry a vote.  After a 30-minute discussion during which seeding on a basis of season records was proposed, no agreement was reached and Manager Griffin finally exercised his perogative and enformed his original plan for seeding with St. Joseph winning the 4th spot.

The drawing eliminates the possibility of any of the 3 county Class B League teams from meeting before the qualifying round and also eliminated the possibility of Strasburg, which has defeated Tusky and Midvale 3 times each, meeting either of those 2 teams during the tournament.  Dennison, in drawing Strasburg, will be meeting a team which defeatedit on December 18th on its own floor 53-13 and will be seeking revenge for that lacing.  Head Coach Al Everhart's Railroaders have come on lately, holding Uhrichsville to a 26-22 score last week, while the Tigers have continued to walk all over all opposition.

St. Joseph will test Millersburg's strength tonight when the 2 teams meet at the Ramblers gym in a regular season game.  Neither Tusky nor Midvale has met their opposition, but Tusky has dropped Midvale twice during regular season play.  Admission to the tournament will be 40 and 60 cents with John Gee of Shadyside and Delbert Blatter of Coshocton officiating.  Only trophies will be the basketballs used in the qualifying round, the 2 winners taking them.

46 - Strasburg Tigers Wins 24th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-23-46)

It wasn't any trouble to get a smile out of the twice-champion Strasburg Tigers pictured above after Saturday night's triumph over the Midvale Blue Devils at Memorial Hall.  The Tigers, including Head Coach Emmet Riley and Senior forward Bob Haas, who saw the game from the pressbox because of an injured leg, are shown grouped around the 2 trophies they won with their undefeated season, the Championship ball and individual medals.

DOVER - The unbeaten Strasburg Tigers, with a record of 23 straight victories, today were savoring the achievement of being crowned double Champion of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League and the 24th Annual Tournament after coming through at Memorial Hall on Saturday night with flying colors. (They also won the 23th Tournament last year.)  The Tigers kept their record clean and won their 10th Tournament Championship by defeating the Midvale Blue Devils 34-24 after a tough stretch battle, while the Tuscarawas Broncos took the Gnadenhutten Indians 52-13 in the Consolation Division final.  All except Gnaden complete in the Sectional here this week.

Not since the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates in 1944 took the county tourney Championship...the League was not operating that year because of the war...and went on all the way up to the Regional Tournament before their string of 26 straight victories was broken, has a League team accomplished what the Strasburg club has this year.

And now 2 new trophies will adorn the already large Tiger collection one for winning the League Championship and another for winning the Tournament Championship, plus another Championship basketball and individual awards for each of the players.  Strasburg has ruled the League this year with an iron hand, Coach Riley's Five having defeated every team which reached the finale no less than 3 times, twice in regular season and putting on the clincher in the tourney.

The Tigers started out by topping the Dundee Bulldogs 45-20, turned back the challenging Tusky Broncos 31-16, edged Gnaden's surprise team 33-30 and then swept over Midvale in the final 4 minutes Saturday night to win 34-24.  Fans rushed out to carry the Strasburg team off the floor after they pulled their stretch drive on the Blue Devil's scrappy club and won going away after a tight ball game.

A superb defense and a lightning finish won the double crown for the Strasburg Tigers (4-0) (65-17) (23-0).  They were tied in the opening quarter 7-7, but went ahead 13-11 at intermission and 21-18 at the end of the 3rd stanza.  The Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) (41-21) (13-7) drew 1st blood in the game, scoring a free throw shot by Senior forward Dave Stevenson before Senior guard Joe Diebel hit a field goal for the Tigers and the battle was on.  Senior forward Jim De Mattio put the Blue Devils back in front with an action shot, but Senior guard Fred Aul slipped two in (2 close shots) and the Tigers led 6-3.  Senior center Max Schaar counted a free throw and Deibel another free toss before Senior guard Karl Baumholtz came through with a field goal and Senior guard Joe Carlisle hit a free throw to knot the count at 7-7 as the quarter ended.

Midvale led through most of the 2nd period, but couldn't stop the Tigers' Sophomore forward Tom Haswell who slipped in 3 action shots to give Strasburg a 13-11 lead at halftime.  Carlisle scored a field goal and free throw and Schaar a free toss for the Blue Devils.  Strasburg scored 8 points in the 3rd stanza, leading by a few points throughout as Senior forward John Garver and big Senior center Junior Yackey connected for the 1st time with field goals and Haswell sank 2 more.  Schaar scored an action shot and 2 free throws, De Mattio a field goal and Baumholtz a free toss as the Tigers led 21-18 going into the final.

Held to a single free throw the 1st half by Strasburg's tight zone, Stevenson opened the final quarter with a bucket from the pivot, but Garver counted a field goal and Yackey a free toss before Midvale scored again, a field goal by De Mattio to make the score 23-22 in favor of the Tigers.  Garver, who was partly crippled the last 3 Strasburg games, stepped into the breach for the Tigers.  With only 4 minutes remaining he slipped in 3 action shots and Yackey came through with a field goal and a free throw and Deibel an action shot as Midvale's defense opened and Stevenson counted the Blue Devils' only 2-pointer in the final 4 minutes.

Tiger team play was outstanding.  Garver and Yackey were spectacular in the last half, Haswell held the Burgers up single handed in the 2nd period with 3 field goals and Aul and Deibel carried the load in the opening quarter.  Haswell had top scoring honors with 10 points, while Garver scored 9, Tackey 6, Deibel 5 and Aul 4.

For Midvale, little Joe Carlisle was outstanding.  He made numerous spectacular stops to hold Strasburg at bay and his floor game couldn't be better.  He came out with 4 points, De Mattio and Schaar each scored 6 points.  Stevenson was submerged in the Strasburg zone and hit only 5 points, while Baumholtz scored 3.  Midvale was charged with 8 personal fouls and Strasburg with 11, each club missing 5.

DOVER - Elmer Linard, Port Washington's star forward who led the county Class B League in scoring throughout the year, held his record intact during the tournament the past 2 weeks at Memorial Hall.  Linard played in 3 games and totaled 71 points, an average of 23.7 points a game, 1 point more than his closest rival, Charley Renner of Bolivar who hit 70 in 4 games for an average of 17.5.

Fred Walton of Tuscarawas was 3rd with an average of 16.2 and Dave Stevenson of Midvale was 4th with an average of 14.0 per game.  Strasburg's Champions didn't place a man in the 1st 10, Tom Haswell averaged 9.2 in 4 games.

DOVER - The Tuscarawas County Class B League's 24th Annual Basketball Tournament, which ended at Memorial Hall on Saturday night, shattered all previous records for attendance and gate receipts, Tournament Manager W.E. Laws announced today.  The 1,303 paid admissions at the final session Saturday swelled the total to 7,031 and the gate recipts to $3,484.85.  The biggest session was a week ago Saturday when 1,670 people were packed into the hall to see the League's 2 strongest contenders, the Strasburg Tigers and the Tuscarawas Broncos, meet in a quarter-finals game.

The previous attendance record was established 2 years ago when 6,892 attended the annual meet.  The previous high for gate receipts was last year when the "take" totaled $3,163.45.  Tournament Manager Laws announced the new records at a ceremony held at the halftime intermission of the Championship finals Saturday night when he presented awards to the winners.

The Strasburg Tigers, tournament Champions, were presented with the Daily Reporter Tournament Trophy and the game ball, purchased by the Godfrey Electric Company.  In addition, members of the team received gold basketball watch charms presented by the Marsh Wall Products Company and the League Trophy presented by the Daily Times.  The Midvale Blue Devils were presented with 10 silver watch charms, donated by the Deardorff and Son Hardward Company and will receive the Sanitary Milk Company Trophy, which did not arrive in time for the presentations.  The Tuscarawas Broncos were presented with the Consolation Division Trophy, donated by the S. Toomey Company.

In a short address before the presentations, Mr. Laws welcomed home the service men and women and had them stand for an ovation for the fans.  He also expressed his thanks to the newspapers and merchants who furnished trophies.
