DOVER - The Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament goes into its final rounds this weekend with the undefeated Strasburg Tigers, already County League Champions, favored to take the title after more than 2000 fans jammed Memorial Hall Saturday night to see the Tigers continue their string of victories to 21 straight at the expense of the Tuscarawas Broncos.

The fans, 1,670 of whom paid to see the 3 games, witnessed the Strasburg club hand the Broncos, who set an all-time tourney record by running up 102 points on the Stone Creek Golden Panthers on Thursday night, a 31-16 lacing, while the Bolivar Cardinals topped the Mineral City Tigers 49-39 and the Baltic Eagles fought off the stubborn Bulldogs of Dundee 40-35 in Consolation Division games.

As early as 4:40PM fans started collecting at Memorial Hall.  It took one hour from 5:55 to 6:55PM, to fill the hall.  After that, with assistance of Hugh Diehl, it was a question of seeing how many more could be crammed in from a waiting line of 3 abreast almost a block long.  The final count was 1,670 paid admissions, an all-time record.  Remainder of the 2,000 were passes to competing schools.

Some fans were turned away and those lucky enough to get in for the tournament's featured attraction were disappointed, for Tusky slipped badly in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the big game and didn't score a field goal.

Head Coach Emmet Riley's Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (63-17) (21-0), in defeating the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-1) (26-28) (17-3) for the 3rd straight time this season, showed an air-tight zone defense plus Sophomore center Junior Yackey's 6-5 of towering strength 2 obstacles the Broncos couldn't evade or overcome.  Strasburg, with Senior forward John Garver partly crippled, got away to a slow start, scoring only one field goal by Senior guard Fred Aul and free throws by Yackey and Aul as Tusky rolled off 7 points.  Senior forward John Vesco collecting 2 field goals, while Senior center Fred Walton collected a bucket and a free throw to give Tuscarawas a 7-4 margin at the end of the quarter.

The Broncos faded badly in the 2nd period as Yackey got in his licks under the basket, grabbing all rebounds and Tusky was held to 2 free throws, Vesco and Senior forward Rich Donahue hitting one-pointers.  Sophomore forward Tom Haswell got one action shot and Yackey 2 free throws and one field goal as Strasburg took a 10-9 lead at halftime intermission.  Haswell sunk his field goal with only 15 seconds to go.

The spectators, expecting a continued fight in the 3rd stanza, saw Strasburg come back strong and the Broncos fade out.  The Tigers, with Yackey hitting 8 points, ran the score up to 21-9 before Senior guard Jay Herning hit a free throw late in the quarter for Tuscarawas' only point and Strasburg had a 21-10 edge going into the final.

Early in the final quarter Tusky sparked a little with Vesco and Donahue each collecting 3 points to cut the advantage to 9, but Strasburg ran its string out then, Haswell and Aul each getting 2 action shots and Yackey 2 free throws.

The Broncos were assessed 20 personal fouls in their battle against the Tigers zone with Donahue leaving the game in the final period.  Strasburg was charged with 11 personals.  Tusky missed 7 free throw tosses and the Bengals missed 17.

Scoring honors went to Yackey who led Strasburg's scoring with 15 points (4 field goals and 7 free throws), while Haswell scored 8, Aul 7 and Senior guard Joe Diebel one.  Vesco led the horsemen with 8 points.  Fred Walton, who scored 31 points in his 1st tourney game, was held to 3 markers, while Donahue collected 4 and Herning one.  Strasburg dropped the Dundee Bulldogs 45-20 in their 1st tournament contest.
