46 - District Tournament Team Statistics

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers with their string of 25 straight victories without a defeat will be carrying with them the best record of any of the 4 teams entered when the Class B District Tournament opens at Zanesville on Friday night.  A statistical check of the records today showed that perhaps the most unspectacular part of theTigers' game is their best asset.

Strasburg does well offensively, scoring an average of 47.4 points per game, but the big difference from other teams is in the defensive department.  There the Tigers have been doing their greatest work and getting in their best licks.  The 25 teams which bucked the Strasburg defense found that out when they scored a point average of 24.2 in each game played against the Bengals.  Twenty-four points doesn't win many ball games and it wasn't enough in any one contest against Strasburg.

Coming right close behind Strasburg is the Tuscarawas Broncos who have scored an average of 51.4 points each of their 26 games, while their opponents were only collecting 31.8 per game.  Included in the Tusky record is a 102-23 victory over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers in the county tournament in Dover, an all-time scoring mark for the event and that gives an indication of the offensive power of the Broncos.

Of the 2 other teams in the tourney, the Zanesville St. Thomas Irish had the best paper record piled up in winning 16 of 20 starts.  The Irish have collected an average of 46.6 points each game, while holding their opponents to 35.7 points a game.  The Irish tied the Philo Electrics and McConnellsville for the Championship of the Muskingum Valley League and then went on to defeat Pennsville 49-41, the Warsaw Eagles 77-41 and the West Lafayette Generals 36-35 in overtime in the Souther Sectional.

The Fraseysburg Red Raiders had a point average per game of 40.4 and their opponents scored 34.2 in administering the 7 defeats in 23 games.  The Red Raiders tied Dresden and the Hopewell Blue Tornadoes for 2nd in the Muskingum County League, then lost to Dresden in the semi-finals of the county tournament winning the Consolation Division entering the Southern Sectional Tournament to knock off the New Concord Little Muskies 44-37 and Zanesville St. Nicholas 49-45.
