46 - Bolivar Stops Port 52-42 (2-12-46)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) (35-28) (12-7) showed good form in disposing of the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) (8-31) by a 10-point margin and gave promise of coming on faster as the tournament goes.

With center Chuck Renner leading the way and ably supported by forwards Don Baad and Ray Murry in the 1st game of the 24th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament, the Red Birds led 13-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The Cards maintained their lead in the 2nd period by picking up another 13 points, while Port improved their output by 2 points in getting 9 markers as the scoreboard read 26-16...Bolivar.  After intermission in the 3rd stanza, both teams were exchanging point-by-point scoring with Bolivar getting the nod point wise with a 1 marker advantage...Bolivar 41-30.  The Cardinals' offense was consistant in each quarter and never let up on the Purple Riders.

Port Washington's Senior Elmer Linard, high scoring forward, was held to just 6 field goals and 2 free throws for 14 points.  Renner outscoring him by one point at 15 markers and game honors.  Senior Sonny Johns scored 11 points for Purple Riders, while Murry got 12, Baad 10, Captain guard Junior Lundenberger had 9 and guard Dick Mase came up with 6 markers for the Red Birds.

NOTE:  BROTHER OF BOLIVAR STAR HAS TOP SEAT

Jack Renner, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Renner of Bolivar, had a ringside seat at the county Class B tournament at Memorial Hall last night.  The lad, who will have to wear a cast for a year because of a rare hip disease, watched his brother, 6-3 Chuck Renner, lead the Bolivar Cardinals to victory from the press box.  County School Superintendent W.E. Laws made the arrangements and Jack, on a stretcher, rooted for the Red Birds through a megaphone.
