Strasburg Tigers Senior Center Ramon Renner picked-off 16 points (7 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading his team in capturing the 15th Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament Championship.

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior Center Lester Veigel hit the hoops for 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw) in leading his team in a 1 point heartbreaking losing cause falling to the Strasburg Tigers 29-28.

A trophy in each arm and a broad grin on his face, Head Coach Paul M. Roby of Strasburg High School, is shown here at the close of the county's Class B League Tournament on Saturday night.  In his right arm he has The Daily Reporter Trophy as tournament winner and in the left is the E. Fienberg  & Company Trophy for wining the League Championship.

DOVER - With the county's 2-coveded championships added to their already long imposing record, the Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (38-8), winner in both the county League and county League Tournament, which ended on Saturday in a thrilling climax, were preparing today to enter the Sectional Tournament with the sensational Tuscarawas Broncos (2-1) (9-16) and powerful Midvale Blue Devils (4-1) (21-11) outfits.  Seven-time winner Strasburg and the 1935 winner Tuscarawas battled their way through the tournament to the final game Saturday which saw the Tigers edge the Broncos 29-28 as a shricking crowd almost raised the roof at Legion Hall.  Midvale upset in its 1st game by Tusky 34-31, swept through the Consolation Division and won the final game from Sugarcreek-Shanesville 45-33.

It was Senior center Ramon Renner of Strasburg who brought the Tigers their 7th tournament Championship.  He scored 16 points to take the nod from Senior Lester Veigel, Tusky center, whose tournament play was surpassed only by Renner.  Eight year Head Coach Paul M. Roby's champions worked their way up to the final game by defeating the Gnadenhutten Indians 41-27 and the Bolivar Cardinals 30-23, while 9 year Head Coach Charmis Davis' runners-up reached the finals by beating Midvale 34-31 and then Sugarcreek-Shanesville.

With an opening ceremony which spotlighted each player in his position on the floor with the only vacant bit of space in the gymnasium, the annual basketball meet was awaiting to drink in the thrill of championship play.  A clean fast game featured by Tusky's great last period rally ended the tournament with the biggest climax in years, the title hanging in the air until the last few seconds.

Renner's part in the Tiger victory was evident in the 1st period when he sent 5 points swishing through the nets, which added to buckets by Junior forward John Miller and Junior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell, gave Strasburg a 9-6 lead over Tuscarawas.  Veigel denied the net once for Tusky, which Senior guard Ralph Minnich, Senior forward Ed Stevenson and Junior forward Chuck Cardani added the other points.  Defensive play was the feature of the 2nd period, which saw both teams stopped almost cold the ball changing hands many times.  Junior guard Charles Reiger and Renner dropped in buckets for Strasburg, while Cardani made a free throw and Veigel a field basket for Tusky.  The Tigers led 13-9.

The 3rd period saw Strasburg start the championship spurt which gave them the title.  The Tigers piled up a 19-10 lead before Sophomore guard Lloyd Haas went out on fouls and by the end of the period they were leading 22-15.  Renner spun 2 buckets through the hoop and Reiger made a bucket and a fout shot to give the Tigers a 29-19 lead and apparently iced the game with less than 4 minutes to go.

However, the Broncos hit its stride and only the timekeepers gun stopped their rally, just one point short.  Tusky's Senior guard Floyd Reichman dropped in a foul and Veigel and Cardani flashed through 2 buckets each for a total of 9 points, but the gun cracked seconds after Veigel's last score.  The huge crowd swept on the floor to claim the 2 teams after the best game of the tournament.

Renner's 16 points was high for game honors with Veigel following closely with 11 for Tuscarawas.  Kenny Mathias, New Philadelphia, Vic Schreiner, Gnadenhutten and Terry Wassem of Ragersville refereed all games during the tournament.

NOTE:  Attendance at the county's Class B Basketball League Tournament last night, when the semi-finals and finals of the regular tourney were played, by far eclipsed previous attendance this year, according to D.E. Haine, Tournament Manager.  A total of 1,145 cash customers paraded through the doors, while enough others made their way in on complimentary tickets to swell the crowd to nearly 1,500.  The hall was completely packed.
