37 - Baltic Rocks Port 40-29 (2-20-37)











The Port Washington Purple Riders:  Front - Earl Roenbaugh, Gene Ludwig, John Bremer, John Eckfield and Albert Glazer.  Back - Head Coach Walter Meade, Manager Louis Gracik, Curt Johns, Don Everhart, Alvin Hoffman and Homer Stocker.



DOVER - The Port Washington Purple Riders (0-2) (4-15) trying to hang-on for a victory in the Consolation Tournament, didn't quite have enough as the Baltic Eagles (1-1) (11-17) sent the Purple Riders packing, ending their 1937 season 40-27.

The Eagles fired in 15 field goals, while the Purple Riders dropped in 13,but the Eagles won the shooting by a wide margin at the free throw line (10-3) and sent Port to the showers.  Junior center Dick Regula and Senior guard Ward Lahm hit their field goals (5 and 4) on a regular basis for the Eagles, while Purple Rider Senior John Bremer was hot ringing 5 field goals for his team.  Port had lost their game to the Gnadenhutten Indians 45-19, while Baltic had lost to the Bolivar Cardinals 32-30 putting both teams into the Consolation Division.

Regula of Baltic won game honors with 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws), while his teammate Lahm also hit double figures with 10 points (4 field goals and 2 free throws).  Leading Port Washington was Bremer with 10 points (5 field goals), as he did against the Indians, making this his last appearance for the Purple Riders.

NOTE:  Paid attendance at the county Class B Tournament at the first 2 sessions (won by Tuscarawas and Strasburg) on Saturday had totaled 905, according to D.E. Haine of Bolivar, Tournament Manager.  The afternoon session (won by Baltic) drew 507 cash customers and 398 is expected to see the evening's play.

NOTE:  Allen Veigel of Tuscarawas High School, a sensational Bronco pitcher there until he graduated last year, is under contract to the Boston Bees in the National League and has been assigned to the Canton team of the Mid-Atlantic League for this season it was announced today.
