35 - Champions Place 3 On Reporter All-Tournament Team

1st TEAM:  UPPER LEFT - Strasburg Tigers Ramon Renner.  UPPER RIGHT - Strasburg Tigers Charles Reiger.  LOWER LEFT - Strasburg Tigers Paul "Pete" Haswell.  LOWER RIGHT - Tuscarawas Broncos Lester Veigel.  CENTER - Midvale Blue Devils Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel).

DOVER - Two forwards that can sweep in and out of any defense, a center that can pump them through from any point under the basket, one guard that can do a superb job at either offense or defense and another that can race up and down the floor like a dash man...that's The Daily Reporter's All-Tournament Class Team, picked with a great regard for the other boys who played their best in the Tuscarawas County Tournament.

Frank Baumholtz, Midvale's sensational forward goes down first.  Pete Haswell one of the Strasburg Champions more than fills the other forward position.  Ramon Renner, Tigers' center, takes that post with ease.  Lester Veigel, Tuscarawas' excellent center, takes one guard position and Charles Reiger, Strasburg's spark-plug, the other.  There you have a team that jumps right up to the top division any time and more than holds its own.  You have speed, uncanny marksmanship, height, brilliance, deception and driving power.  Now that the die is cast, let's take a look at these 5 players.  They're all competitive players.  They can and have been in all the tight spots, but their answer is an extra burst of speed, the faster the pace the better they play.

FRANK BAUMHOLTZ - There can be no doubt at all about this lad who looks like a matinee idol and plays like a demon.  He can't be beat at shooting and that means shooting when covered, just what it takes to win ball games and he's so deceptive and fast that no guard can hold him under 10 points or generally fifteen.

PAUL "PETE" HASWELL - Like Baumholtz he drops them in when covered, but he can't be beat on the floor game end.  Haswell isn't so tall, but he turns on the speed and hawks the ball so closely he picks it up most any time, on offense or defense.  That too, is one of the Midvale star's long points.

RAMON "BOOTS" RENNER - A center has his hands full all the time for generally he works in a congested section of the floor and stamina as well as speed is required.  He has booth those virtues.  The tournament proved that all you have to do is get the ball to him under the hoop and "it's a bucket."

LESTER VEIGEL - He was to the Tuscarawas team what Baumholtz was to Midvale.  A tall strong youth, he has an excellent overhand shot that clicks off points and on defense he's in the thick of the play, capable enough to lead any team.  Also a bear taking them off the backboard.

CHARLES REIGER - Last, but not lease by any chance, here is a boy that has one specialty...cracking a defense wide open and whizzing through to the bucket.  He's on top of the play all the time and is second, to none in speed, ball handling and diagnosing plays.

THE 2ND TEAM - Ward Kreis of Bolivar and Cliff Moomaw of Sugarcreek-Shanesville are placed at the forwards.  Dick Regula of Baltic at center, John Harmon of Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Floyd Reichman of Tuscarawas at guards.

Kreis puts up the biggest battle for the 1st team and made a marvelous tournament record.  A headlong player with an eye for the basket, he would give anyone a battle.  Moomaw at the other forward is another tricky speedster and although his tournament shooting wasn't so good he has what it takes to invade a defense.

At center, Dick Regula of Baltic probably is one of the most steady and dependable ball payers you can find.

John Harmon and Floyd Reichman at guards represent a tower of strength and their qualification include the fact that they were the bulwark of their teams.

HONORABLE MENTION - Discussion of 10 more players leaves the field wide open for arguments and many seem justifiable.  Placed in the position of any of the 1st ten they might make either team, but circumstances prevented them from doing so.  Several lack the polish, but there's a lot of good boys and certainly good basketball players in the list.  They made up part of the cream of the crop and might be at the top of the list any time.

For their splendid work we mention John Hawkins of Midvale, Don Ridle and Dale Andrews of Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Joe Bollini and Charles Cardani of Tuscarawas, Glen Lebold of Bolivar, Ward Lahm of Baltic, Lloyd Haas of Strasburg, Dean Ackerman of Mineral City and Leland Goettge of Gnadenhutten.
